Why would eyelashes cause an eye problem? 👁️
Eyelashes are supposed to help protect the eye — but sometimes they can become the problem.

Some pets develop distichiasis, a condition where extra eyelashes grow from an abnormal location along the eyelid.

Depending on the hair and where it sits, it can rub against the surface of the eye and cause irritation, excessive tearing, squinting, or even damage to the cornea. Some pets with distichiasis never seem bothered by it, while others may need treatment to keep their eyes comfortable and healthy.

Why does your pet’s eye suddenly turn bright green during an eye exam? 👁️

It’s called a fluorescein stain, and it’s a simple diagnostic test used to evaluate the surface of the eye.

A small amount of fluorescent dye is placed on the eye. Healthy corneal tissue doesn’t hold onto the stain, but areas where the cornea has been damaged can take it up and glow bright green.

This helps your veterinary ophthalmology team identify problems such as corneal scratches and ulcers that may otherwise be difficult to see. The stain can also be useful for evaluating how tears drain from the eye.

It may look dramatic, but it provides valuable information about your pet’s eye health — all in just a few moments!

Eye exams can be a little intimidating for some pets—especially those with strong opinions about being examined!

We loved hearing about Mark’s experience with his Chihuahua and our team: “They performed a thorough eye exam on our VERY fussy Chihuahua. The staff were very patient with our dog, and she did very well.”

What Happens at Your First Eye Appointment? 🐾
Seeing a veterinary ophthalmologist for the first time? We want you to know what to expect.

During a new patient appointment, our team performs a complete examination of each eye along with diagnostic testing as appropriate. This may include measuring tear production, checking the pressure inside the eyes, and using fluorescein stain to evaluate the surface of the eye.

Once the examination and testing are complete, we'll discuss what we've found, answer your questions, and talk through recommendations for your pet.

TRUE OR FALSE? 👀 If your pet’s eye looks cloudy, they have a cataract. ----- The answer: False!

Cataracts can certainly cause changes in the appearance of an eye, but they're only one possible explanation for cloudiness. Changes involving the cornea, inflammation inside the eye, glaucoma, and even normal changes associated with aging can affect how an eye looks.

That's why determining why an eye has changed is so important. A veterinary ophthalmic examination allows us to look at the different structures of the eye and determine what may be causing the change.
