In my 35 years of experience working with the Doberman breed through breeding, training, veterinary medicine, and coaching Doberman owners, one thing has become very clear:
"Genetics matter." 💯😎👌
One of the biggest misconceptions is that all Dobermans have the same personality, temperament, and behaviors simply because they are the same breed. That isn't true.
A Doberman's behavior and overall temperament are heavily influenced by the genetics behind the dog. A breeder's bloodlines, selection criteria, breeding goals, early neurological development, socialization, and the experiences they provide during those critical first eight weeks all play an important role before the puppy ever goes to its new home.
This is why one family may have an incredible experience with one Doberman, then purchase another from a different breeder and find themselves with a completely different dog. It doesn't necessarily mean one dog is "good" and the other is "bad." It often reflects differences in genetics and early development.
From there, the new owner's environment, training, leadership, nutrition, lifestyle, and daily experiences continue to shape who that dog becomes.
The outcome is never determined by genetics alone or environment alone—it's the combination of both.
This is exactly why breed-specific education and responsible breeding matter. Understanding where your puppy comes from is just as important as understanding how you'll raise them after they come home.
