🇺🇸 Get ready for the 4th of July with my awesome preparation tip!

Wish you could block out those pesky flashes of light from the fireworks, but don’t have curtains or blinds? 💥

Don't worry, I’ve got you covered!

👉🏻 Just grab some inexpensive, spring loaded tension rods (around $6 each at Walmart) and a cheap set of blackout curtains. They don't have to be fancy or match your decor perfectly. This is just a temporary solution, and the practicality and peace of mind it provides are worth it!

Keep your home a sanctuary for your dog and give yourself peace of mind this 4th of July.

Puppy teeth have one mission in life:

"Must. Put. Everything. In. Mouth." 🦈

Shoelaces
Pant legs
Chair legs
Your hands

Chewing is normal. Biting is normal. Exploring the world with their mouth is normal.

Your puppy doesn’t need to learn not to chew or bite.

Your puppy needs to learn what’s ok to chew and put their teeth on.

When those puppy teeth start targeting your shoes, furniture, pant legs, leash, or your body parts (puppies are really fond of hands and feet) redirect them to a toy or chew instead.

Every time your puppy practices chewing an appropriate item, they're building a habit.

Make the right choice easy by keeping toys and chews within reach.

Help your puppy gnaw on the things you actually want them to chew.

Your puppy isn’t trying to be difficult.
They're just being a puppy. 💙🐶

📢 Breaking News:

Studies show that puppy parents are significantly more likely to have frozen KONGs available than they are to drink enough water.

(Okay, I made that up.)

Take 10 minutes and stock your freezer with a few KONGs.

Your puppy doesn't care if it's Friday, Saturday, or a random Tuesday when they wake up and choose chaos.

And trust me, the moment you think, "I wish I had a frozen KONG right now..." is not the moment you'll want to make one.

Be prepared.

Freeze KONGs.

Stay hydrated.

Survive puppyhood. 🐶💙

There is so much more to socializing puppies than meeting every dog and all the people.

We want puppies to grow up to be comfortable around other dogs and to not be fearful of people, but HOW we socialize our puppies is a crucial part of the process.

Each time a puppy interacts with something new, they are determining if it’s safe/ good or unsafe/scary.

Taking a puppy to a festival where there are lots of people and other dogs might not be the socialization experience someone is hoping for. It can be overwhelming and stressful, associating people and other dogs with an unhappy experience. This has the opposite effect of what we are looking to achieve.

We need to be prepared to remove ourselves and puppies from a situation that is stressful for them.

Going on a walk and observing people and dogs from a distance would be less stressful and more impactful.

Meeting one person and having a great experience with that one person would be more beneficial than having many people come up to see your new puppy.

Orchestrating your puppies interactions will ensure more positive experiences.

A little reminder for puppy parents today...

Training matters.

Teaching life skills matters.

Helping your puppy learn how to live in our human world matters.

But don't get so focused on trying to create the perfect puppy that you forget how awesome they already are.

The one who curiously follows you from room to room.

The one who gets excited when you come back from taking out the trash.

The one who falls asleep in ridiculous positions.

The one who makes you laugh every single day.

Yes, there are things to teach.

There will be potty accidents, shark teeth, zoomies, stolen socks, and moments that make you question your life choices.

But underneath all of that is a pretty amazing dog.

Remember why you wanted a puppy in the first place.

Not to create a perfectly trained robot.

Not to have a puppy who never makes mistakes.

But because you wanted a companion. A friend. A dog to share your life with.

Take a break from worrying about what your puppy still needs to learn and notice all the things that already make them pretty great.

Training is important.

But so is enjoying your puppy.

One of the easiest ways to help your puppy learn where to potty is to take them to the same area every time.

Not this corner today.
That corner tomorrow.
The flower bed on Thursday.
The neighbor's lawn on Saturday. 😅

It doesn't need to be a tiny square foot of grass, but having a general "potty zone" helps your puppy make connections much faster.

Why?

Puppies learn through repetition and patterns.

You want to create a ‘creature of habit’ so to speak.

The more often your puppy potties in the same area, the faster they learn:

"THIS is where I go."

Bonus: you'll spend less time wandering around the yard wondering why your puppy suddenly forgot they needed to p*e.

Consistency makes house training easier for everyone.

Including your floors and the grass. 🌱🐾

Is your dog afraid of fireworks? Does the upcoming 4th of July holiday cause you stress knowing how it may trigger anxiety in your dog?

With the upcoming 4th of July holiday many dog parents are already feeling the pressure of how their dogs will handle the fireworks.

Some even hope for rain so fireworks displays will be cancelled or prevent neighbors from setting them off. 💥

❤️ The kindest thing you can do for your dog is to consult your veterinarian about medication options that can ease their anxiety.

I understand that many people are concerned about their dogs becoming like zombies. Let me assure you, the right medication will only take the edge off and help your dog relax without turning them into zombies.

Discuss your worries with your vet, explore the best medication choices for your dog, and find the correct dosage to provide relief.

It's not too late to alleviate your stress about your dog's well being during the 4th of July
weekend. Take the time to talk to your vet and discover ways to help your dog cope.

👀 Stay tuned for our upcoming tips on how to prepare for the 4th of July weekend.

🎉 It’s Friday! In honor of National Cheese Day (yesterday) you Feta Brie-lieve I have a fun and cheesy pun to remind you to grab your puppy’s favorite filling this weekend.

🧀 I’m making some cheese filled ones to celebrate! Don’t let your puppy Swiss out on the fun.

So get ready for a Gouda time and let the cheese-chasing and tail wagging begin!

National Cheese Day

I just had to go with some fun puns today.

Today, we're celebrating two things I absolutely adore: cheese and our fur-ocious little learners!

🧀 Did you know that cheese makes an amazing high value reward during puppy training?

It's a cheesy jackpot that gets puppy tails wagging and their little brains filled with excitement! Use it to motivate and reinforce positive behaviors.

And always remember… you’re competing with the environment every time you are training your puppy! 🌳

With so many distractions out there, it's essential to make training sessions engaging and fun.

Be the most exciting thing in your puppy’s world by bringing out the power of cheese and showing them that learning with you is the tastiest adventure they can have! 🧀

So, grab your cheese, get your puppy's attention, and let the training extravaganza begin!

And of course… be patient, consistent, and shower your puppy with cheese fueled praise.

Here's to the power of cheese and the endless possibilities it brings to our puppies education! Happy National Cheese Day, and keep spreading the cheesy love! ❤️

🧀 But seriously, high value rewards work so much better when training your puppy. You HAVE to be better than the squirrel, the barking dog, the leaf blowing in the breeze, or the kids running in the park.

👉🏻 Use high value rewards. Pay out big.

Today is National Repeat Day. Today is National Repeat Day.

It's National Repeat Day, but here's a training tip: when it comes to teaching skills to your puppy, less is more!

🚫 Repeating cues over and over doesn’t teach your puppy the behavior you want.

Repeating cues actually makes them LESS valuable.

Puppy parents often call their puppy to come MANY times during the day. Most of the time the puppy isn’t coming. So they call again and again & again.

These puppies are learning that sometimes they come, sometimes they don’t.

The word loses its meaning and isn’t very important. (Did you know one of the top complaints we get from clients is that their puppy is blowing them off and won’t come when called? This is one of the reasons why).

✨ It takes 100’s of repetitions for a behavior to become solid. If you’re not practicing over and over and over, you won’t get the desired behavior you’re looking for.

💖 Reward, reward, reward! Shower your puppy with positive reinforcement to communicate that they've nailed the behavior you're looking for. Treats, praise, and belly rubs go a long way in reinforcing their good choices! 🥓

🌍 In Order for your puppy to perform ALL the skills you want, EVERYWHERE you want, you have to practice over and over and over again in different locations.

🔑 Consistency is the magic ingredient! If you want your puppy to ace door manners or greet guests politely, make sure to practice those behaviors every single time. Clear expectations lead to well behaved puppies.

Training takes time and patience (and should always be fun for you puppy! 🎉)

Celebrate National Repeat Day by putting these tips into action and helping your puppy become the best version of themselves!
