Okay not really, but I was REALLY tempted to!!

During adolescence, Everest was the WORST leash puller! Like, blisters on my hands at the end of every walk-level bad. I tried all the tricks—stopping when he pulled, turning the other direction, endless clicking/treating while walking around my house, yard, and street, higher value treats, two point leash—nothing was helping.

I ended every walk feeling frustrated, my hands hurting, and dreaming about just slapping a prong collar on him to get some relief. But I knew that wasn’t the answer, because while it would make walks more enjoyable for me, it would make them much less enjoyable for Everest.

So I lived with his leash pulling, and continued to dedicate lots of time to leash training. Over the course of a year or so, I slowly started to see some progress. Now he walks great on leash! Does he still pull occasionally? Sure! Most dogs do during exciting moments. But it’s much more manageable.

All this to say, if you’ve been struggling to see progress with your training, don’t give up, you’ve got this! And if you need help, don’t be afraid to reach out, I’d be happy to help you!

We’re still here! Life has been busy, and throwing a lot at me lately, so keeping up with social media has not been my priority. BUT, I wanted to take time to introduce just a couple of our newest students🎓

Cooper is a newly adopted, 9-month-old Cairn Terrier puppy embracing his full terrier personality. He loves to make the neighborhood aware of his presence with his barking. What is he barking at? Noises he hears, ants he finds on the ground, and sometimes…who knows? We’re working on cutting back on being the neighborhood alert dog while meeting his terrier needs and teaching some basic life skills.

Biscuit is a young service dog in training who is already doing great at tasking for his human, but struggles with engagement in public and remembering that his human partner exists when there are other dogs or people around. Formerly started on aversive tools, his owner is also ready to make the switch to reward-based learning to help build Biscuit’s confidence and joy in working. We’re working on building his engagement around distractions while developing a stronger relationship to support the team in all their future years together.
