Luci was tracking this buck step for step…. Till she wasn’t…. I’m in a love hate relationship with the wind! The second her head goes up and wants to leap into the direction it’s coming from, ya just don’t know what we will find! Many times it’s our target animal. But in the past we found live deer ( I can normally tell though ) gut piles , the wrong dead deer, if its not our target animal then we have to go back to where she left off tracking.

So i told the hunter to stay right here. Off we went ! Luci’s actions told me this is likely the target we were looking for . So we continued with the wind in our face. After about 175 yards i spot the buck laying down in the bottom . I yelled up to the hunter that he could advancedown to me. And pointed across the creek! There’s your buck.

Im always more satisfied with tracking right to the deer. But Luci likes to cheat the wind!

In the picture the wind is in my face and we came from the ridge behind us, some 175 yards to the right. Had not the wind been in our favor she would have tracked it step for step. congratulations to the hunter!

A local hunter bagged a record-setting bear at a state park. Here's how long it took him to get it out of the woods with the help of others >>> wpxi.tv/4om5J1g

Got this call last night! The hunter called me right after he took the shot!

His description of the shot : 62 yards , crossbow, ( practices at 100 ) hit a little back.

He watched the buck for quite awhile as slowly walked away only to bed down within sight.

At one point the hunter explained he thought it was going to expire right there. Eventually the buck rose from his first bed and walk off again only to bed again within sight.

At this point the buck even laid his head on the ground and closed his eyes. The hunter believed the buck was again going to die right there.

However several deer then came into the field. A doe even went up to sniff the buck.
The buck was not alarmed however things soon changed!

A smaller buck then came into the field. Immediately the wounded buck attempted to rise but fell right back to the ground.
His second attempt he made it to his feet and slowly walked away to the wood line. Tail twitching side to side.

Sounds easy right?

One of those where you think “will find him just inside the wood line” Nope!

I made a mistake or two tracking this one. First mistake was letting the hunter tell me where the deer entered the wood line. Instead of letting the dog show me!

So we spent the first 45 minutes checking areas the deer didn’t even exit to.

Back to known spot we know the deer was. Luci takes the track up into the woods and makes a right turn soon we come to another bed with blood in it! Now I know we are in business!

However it’s so fricking thick and luci getting tangled and the Fat old guy on the end of the lead having to break brush. We get off the line and circle back to our ride back to the trucks.

By this time I got sweat dripping off my ball cap. We’ve been at it nearly two hours. We are all about to call it! Then I remembered I knew this deer was dead and not wanting to leave it behind in the woods. I said let’s try it one more time! The 70 year old hunter said I’m game! We might not find him but it’s not gonna be for lack of trying !

I told myself if Luci shows me that last bloody bed again I’ll follow her where ever she wants to go! The direction is all hers to determine…

I have to keep up best I can ,easier this time as I already busted through once. Soon we are on that bloody bed again !

I give her plenty of slack to prevent tangles in the lead in the thickness. I do my best to keep up slowing when she slows and keeping up best I can at times!

Finally we come to a clearcut I have not seen before. And Luci works down a quad trail. All of a sudden she’s on her hind legs in the wind! Getting excited zipping back and forth.

Little did I know that fine Pennsylvania buck was a mere 10 feet away laying dead! I was first to see him. I turned to the hunter and said he’s right there! He walked around me then turn back to me and I swear he teared up! We shared a hug and a hand shake! Praised the lord ! What a way to end the last day of statewide archery !
