Romeo x Filly puppies are here! 🩷❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🖤🩶
Filly welcomed 9 chunky monkey black/rust puppies on July 16th, 5 females and 4 males. (Kinda funny her first 5 were all girls and her last 4 were all boys.)
She has also been an amazing first time mom! She’s attentive, dedicated, and has more than enough milk to keep nine hungry puppies in a permanent food coma.
These portraits were taken at one week of age, and they’re already about 3½ weeks old now. I’m a little behind on sharing because, well… raising 16 puppies keeps me busy.
Having two simultaneous litters is what made the most sense for these two girls and our schedules.
I don’t breed on a set schedule or have a certain number of litters each year. In fact 4 out of the last 6 years I didn’t have a breeding or litter at all. Every breeding is planned around the individual bitch: her age and maturity, health testing, titling goals, temperament, recovery, pedigree, and whether I believe the pairing will genuinely improve my breeding program.
I also have to consider my own life and schedule. Dogs don’t ask if you’re free before coming into season, they generally come into heat about twice a year on their timeline. Once puppies arrive, life revolves around being present for whelping, around the clock neonatal care, feeding, cleaning, socialization, evaluations, and supporting new owners.
Echo and Filly happened to come into season just one week apart, which meant they were ready to be bred at nearly the same time. For me, I’d rather have 10 weeks of double puppy chaos than 20 weeks of single litter chaos. 😅
It’s certainly more work in the moment, but it also allows me to pour everything I have into this season of puppy raising before returning to the rest of life.
Every year looks different because every breeding is intentional. That’s also why it’s impossible for me to predict years in advance when the next litter will be. Prima will always move at the pace that best serves my girls and my ability to give every puppy the time and attention they deserve.
I’m incredibly proud of both of these litters and can’t wait to watch their little personalities begin to emerge over the coming weeks.
