How to use a rattlesnake’s rattle to know its age. …you can’t.
Well not exactly. While the rattle won’t tell you exactly how old a rattlesnake is it can give you an idea if the snake is a youngster or an old timer.
Younger rattlesnakes grow faster than older rattlers so their rattles will have a more dramatic taper from the base of their rattle to the tip. That is because each segment shows you how big the tip of their tail was when they shed that segment.
As rattlesnakes age those skinny segments they added in their younger years break off leaving a rattle that may not have very much or any taper to it.
That means the rattlesnake has not been growing quickly and can indicate it is an older snake or that times have been hard. If enough food is not available their growth will slow down and so will adding segments to their rattle.
