🔥 Spice Highlight: Spice 5 - Extreme

Spice 5 is the top of the scale.

This is keeper-only territory for animals that are medically significant and demand real experience, the right tools, and a serious safety plan. These are not animals to “work up to” casually.

Spice 5 means:
⚠️Fast strikes
⚠️Constant defensive posture
⚠️Ritualized maintenance
⚠️Zero shortcuts

Top Spice 5 picks at Big Z’s:
🦂Cape Verde Alligator Back Scorpion
🦂Pakistan Red Scorpion
🦂Arizona Bark Scorpion

At this level, setup matters just as much as the animal. Locking enclosures, redundant security, and a closed room are the standard, not the upgrade.

Big Z says: Spice 5 goes home with the right keeper or it doesn’t go home at all.

If you are unsure whether Spice 5 is right for you, message us first. We are happy to help guide you toward the right fit.

🔥 Spice 4 — Advanced

Spice 4 is where things get serious.

These animals are not beginner-friendly and are best for experienced keepers who already have multiple successful setups behind them. Spice 4 animals can be fast, defensive, harder to predict, and much less forgiving if the enclosure or handling plan is sloppy.

Think: blink-and-miss-it speed, threat displays, fast strikes, and setups that need to be sealed, secure, and dialed in before every interaction.

Spice 4 examples at Big Z’s:
💥Horrid King Assassin Bug
💥Goliath Birdeater Tarantula
💥Malaysian Cherry Red Centipede

At this level, lid management matters just as much as the animal itself. Backup enclosures, catch cups, and a calm plan are part of the setup.

Big Z says: If you have to ask if you’re ready, you’re not ready. Message us first and we’ll help you figure it out.

🌶️ SPICE 3 — Intermediate

Spice 3 is where the hobby starts talking back.

These animals are faster, fussier, and more opinionated. They are not impossible, but they do expect you to already know the basics. Think successful molts, good feeding rhythms, solid enclosure habits, and calm catch-cup work.

Spice 3 is for keepers who can handle:
💥Faster movement
💥Threat displays
💥Humidity and ventilation balance
💥Escape-proof setups
💥Animals that make you read their cues

Top Spice 3 picks at Big Z’s:
🌶️ Darth Maul Tarantula
🌶️ Madagascan Black Scorpion
🌶️ Florida Bark Scorpion

Featured today: Florida Bark Scorpion 🦂

This is one of those animals that can be super rewarding when you respect what it is. Not a first-time keeper pick, but a great step up for someone ready for more personality and speed.

🌶️ SPICE 2 — BEGINNER

Spice 2 is that sweet little step up from Spice 1.

Still beginner-friendly, still forgiving, but now you start seeing a little more personality: deliberate movement, mild defensive postures, and that classic “okay buddy, I see you” feeding response.

Today’s Spice 2 fella: Emperor Scorpion 🦂

These guys are one of our favorite picks for newer keepers who want something a little more exciting without jumping straight into the spicy end. They are bold, chunky, impressive, and usually pretty manageable with the right setup.

Spice 2 is best for:
Someone who has done well with a simple beginner setup and wants an animal with more presence.

Big Z says:
Emperors are a sweet spot for most adult first-time keepers. Give them the right enclosure, humidity, hides, and respect, and they are honestly awesome.

SPICE 1 — KID SAFE 🌈

Spice 1 is where we want new keepers to feel confident, not overwhelmed.

Today’s example: Ivory Millipedes.

They’re slow, calm, low-defense, and perfect for someone who wants to learn the rhythm of keeping without jumping straight into speed, venom, or escape risk.

This is the lane for families, first-time keepers, classroom-style setups, and anyone who wants the hobby to feel fun instead of stressful.

🐛 Kid Safe picks: Rubber Ducky Pill Millipede · Ivory Millipede · Regal Jumping Spider

🌶️ SPICE WEEK STARTS NOW

Spice is more than just venom.

When Big Z started out, every forum had its own labels and "beginner-friendly" was getting stuck on tarantulas that bite. So we stopped arguing about names and built our own system.
The Spice System is one number, 1 to 5, that tells you exactly how hot a fella is to keep. Six lenses go into every rating - care, temper, speed, venom, escape risk, and Big Z's read on the whole animal- distilled into a single number beginners AND experienced keepers can agree on.

All week, we're breaking down each level one at a time with a featured fella to match it:

🌱 Spice 1 — Kid Safe — slow, chill, almost impossible to spook
🌶️ Spice 2 — Beginner — forgiving, just a little more personality
🌶️🌶️ Spice 3 — Intermediate — faster, fussier, reads keeper cues
🔥 Spice 4 — Advanced — hot setups, fast animals, real consequences
⚠️ Spice 5 — Extreme — medically significant, keeper-only territory

The whole point is simple: match the animal to the keeper, no impulse mistakes.

🕷️ DROP ALERT — Curly Hair Tarantula Juveniles

Tliltocatl albopilosus — 3 to 4 inch juveniles

The Curly Hair is one of the most bulletproof beginner tarantulas in the hobby — calm, hardy, and that golden bronze setae makes them one of the better-looking terrestrials you'll keep. These juvies are at a great size: past the fragile sling stage, already showing their full coloration, and eating well.

🟡 Beginner Spice — forgiving husbandry, rarely defensive, great display animal once settled.

Pair with a Burrow Buddy enclosure + Tropical Burrow Mix substrate and you've got a complete setup ready to go.
