Hope everyone is at home staying warm!!

Something we’ve been asked a bunch this week- How do we keep the outside horses warm?

HAY! Horses digest primarily through fermentation which keeps them warm from the inside out. AOn a day like today we make sure they have unlimited hay and fresh water so they can keep themselves warm. We also help them out with blankets and hoods. And while we might not want to see snow sitting on their faces, that is a really great indication that they are properly insulated and that the snow and cold air isn’t getting through their coats!! Makes for some silly pictures too. (Our lovely Chatty is in the barn this weekend, we were afraid about his tiny legs not being able to walk around if we got 2 feet of snow!! 😂)

Chatty would like to remind everyone that there will be no lessons today due to the temperature! The horses are all in front of big piles of hay to keep warm!

Our cutoff temperature for riding is 25 degrees for the welfare of our beloved lesson ponies- other than the fact that at those temperatures there is no way to keep warm while riding it will begin to impact their lungs (and ours too!).
