Nicknamed the "snowbirds," seeing these little charcoal-and-white sparrows hopping around the yard is an age-old sign that autumn is giving way to winter. Do you remember seeing them at your grandparents' feeders?

If you've heard hooting in your neighborhood this month, you're hearing the start of owl breeding season. 🦉

Great horned owls, the most widespread owl in North America, start their courtship in fall.
What's happening now:

→ Pairs call back and forth at dusk and dawn, often in duets

→ The female's voice is higher-pitched than the male's

→ They defend their territory and reinforce their pair bond

Then the calendar gets wild:

→ By December and January, females lay eggs
→ They often take over old hawk, crow, or squirrel nests

→ They incubate in freezing temperatures, sometimes with snow on their backs

→ Owlets are hatching by late winter, so they can hunt in spring when prey is abundant
What they eat:

→ Rabbits, mice, voles, rats, squirrels, and ducks
→ Skunks (they have a poor sense of smell, so skunk spray barely bothers them)

The guilt-reversal:
People fear owls as omens. People also poison the rodents owls eat. Rat poison moves up the food chain, and owls die from what they ate, not from anything they did.

What you can do:
→ Skip rodenticides (and use snap traps or seal entry points instead)

→ Leave large, old trees standing, especially those with old hawk nests

→ Avoid pruning big trees between now and spring, when owls may be nesting

→ Keep pets safe near dusk in owl territory. Small cats and dogs can be prey

→ Step outside at dusk and listen. Try to catch the duet
It's not a horror movie.
It's a love story, at 20 degrees. 🌙
