Hike & Train Adventures... A beautiful check in by Stanley during play. He then was able to stay with me and wait for Miles to recall to me. Stanley could have easily took off again to go find Miles. However, you see that he looks for his friend, but stays with me. Teaching Stanley to stay vs taking off requires that I am the most rewarding option in this situation.

Hike & Train Adventures... Check in's & recall. A check in is when the dog chooses to check in with me on their own. A recall is when I call them to come to me. Training both are valuable. Both dogs were able to do both.

Did you notice how Stanley finished his recall? He actually came in over excited and jumped at Miles. Then still over stimulated he went right into his natural instincts and started to nip at Miles's heel. Immediately I asked for a sit command. Why? Every dog can instantly do a sit. It then refocuses the dog and starts to settle the mind.

This was a perfect example of working through a command and natural instinct depending on the breed of your dog. Ideally when a dog recalls you want a relaxed front and center position. Stanley is working on the finish. Remember, there are many steps to one command.

Hike & Train Adventures... High stimulation/excitement is when most owners cannot get their dogs to listen to them. Why? Most likely because they did not reinforce the follow through of the command. This causes you, the owner to be devalued to your dog. Why should they listen if you don't find the command important and valuable?

Stanley is a border collie mix. He has a high prey drive and when over stimulated by nature instincts or play his brain right now has a hard time comprehending commands. We are training him through play/excitement to follow through on his commands.

Notice in the background the people and dogs. We already said hi to them politely and on leash. Low stimulation on proper socialization. Then we worked commands, still on leash. Finally we did recall in a play situation. We also want a recall that is front and center and a complete stop.

Hike & Train Adventures... These dogs did great together. Since they all know the rules of hiking and socializing I was able to have them all together.

Hike & Train Adventures...The come command is very important. Training this command during high stimulation and/or stress takes consistency and time. This is why we are always working recall.

Hike & Train Adventures... Everyday has a different size crew. Today was a big crew and they all had a great adventure! From loose leash hiking to off leash exploring.
