Hike & Train Adventures... This is part three of the training session Murphy had with Ella & Buckley. In the other videos you see we did structured hiking on the trail. All dogs learn to heel and hike appropriately with people, dogs and bikes around. Next we did command training adding in distractions. Finally we did some playing.

Ella and Buckley are what we consider balanced dogs, so that is why besides my dog these were the next two I introduced to Murphy. In this video you notice Murphy is working on personal space etiquette. Ella had enough of him sniffing too much and too long so she corrected him. He was able to respond correctly. You want a balanced dog to correct a puppy so the puppy can learn. Once Murphy was behaving appropriately Ella engaged in play again with him.

Then you have Buckley who is about 8-9 months old. He has come a long way with his training. The owner got him at 5 months and he started training with me right away. Did you notice his wonderful check -in with me during play? That is exactly what you want. I do have two unneutered males engaging appropriately. Murphy is almost a year old. Personally and disposition is most important, which is why I matched these two males together. Lastly, notice that Murphy is over stimulated and right now can't focus on a command. That is exactly why we start with on leash to help them learn how to focus and respond to commands in stimulating situations.

Hike & Train Adventures... Exploring, socializing, recalling, all while it was raining.

Hike & Train Adventures... Training recall with distraction. Murphy has a good foundation of recall. Here you will see that with distraction of dogs he can't focus and follow through the first time I recall them.

This is exactly where the breakdown of teaching and training your dog occurs. Many owners would let this slide and then wonder why their dog does not recall to them. Notice I pick up Murphy's leash and I guide him in to finish the recall command. This is the step where the true training happens.

Next video we recall again. This time I have Murphy's leash attached to me. This is so I can guide him exactly during the command if needed. He does much better! Did you see that he recalled much better and even sat at the end. He actually heard the command this time and was able to follow through. Murphy was still distracted, as you see how much he still was focused on his friends. However, this time the neurons in his brain could actually respond to hearing the command and following through on the action. Thus the beginning step of training with and through distractions.

Hike & Train Adventures... Murphy has been making steady progress so today we introduced him to some dogs. Buckley and Ella were perfect to introduce to Murphy.

We started with heeling and structured walking. Murphy's biggest issue is figuring out personal space around other dogs. Right now he wants to be sniffing them longer than appropriate. We started with all of them heeling. Then on the way back I put Murphy on the other side of me to help teach him where appropriate space is for him.

Stay tune for the next video of them working their recall command.

Hike & Train Adventures... we are always recalling since we cover a lot of ground on our hikes.

Hike & Train Adventures...Off leash heeling started with on leash heeling. Teaching the position of where you want your dog to be is the first step.

As soon as I was done filming Buckley and Ella we rounded the corner and sure enough an owner and two dogs were coming towards us. She asked if we could all meet. I had Buckley and Ella sit and then the other two dogs moved towards us. I like to train that my crew waits instead of allowing them to run towards other dogs. Also it gives me more control to be right there instead of dogs being out of reach.

Murphy is learning his heel and did great. We hike with a loose leash and when we pass kids or multiple runners in a row he is in a heel position. As a working dog that naturally wants to herd moving targets having him focus on heeling in those situations keeps his mind focused on what he needs to be doing.

Hike & Train Adventures... A great Friday for fun and adventures. We did make our way to the water and trails.

Hike & Train Adventures... Everyone recalls at their own pace. We got Cooper, I'll be first. Buckley doesn't want to be left out. Charlie can only move his little legs so fast, but will make sure he is not last. Savannah will arrive when she is ready to arrive. Garth brings up the rear.
They all gave different personalities, yet they all know they need to recall when asked.
