Yes, Cats need Baths
The feline tongue is covered with backward facing barbs that work like a natural comb. Self grooming cats can't degrease their own coat, exfoliate their skin or remove compacted undercoat. Matting greasy buildup, odor and even hairballs are often signs that your cat's coat needs professional intervention and not just a better brush at home.
Bathing is preventative care not emergency repair. Done regularly bathing:
* loosens and removes dead coat before it mats
* helps manage and control seasonal shedding
* reduces dander and airborne allergens
* prevents painful skin conditions under build up or clumps
* improves coat texture, volume and cleanliness
* identifies changes in skin, coat, and weight that you might otherwise not notice
When you pair a thorough bath, a proper blow dry, and a good comb or brush out. You are receiving back a cat who you are helping stay cleaner, healthier, and more comfortable between visits. (Some of this information was gathered by reading an article by Lynn Paolillo that she wrote for Groomer to Groomer magazine)

Disinfectant
One of my regular customers asked me about what disinfectant(s) I use in the van as she was having an issue with bleach she was using. I have about 5 or 6 disinfectants in my van I use a lot, the one I recommend for general use is called 256 or 256 concentrated disinfectant. It is a cleaner, disinfectant, deodorizer, fungicide mildew and virucide it is effective against many known viruses including parvo, covid 19 and coronavirus. I buy it in gallon container is very concentrated makes up to 256 gallons of cleaner from 1 gallon of concentrates you can use it on floors, walls, tubs, cages, tables, countertops and more it is great for metal or plastic grooming tools. I also use a variety of other cleaning, deodorizing and disinfecting, fungicide and mildew preventing products, windex, clorox wipes, I also like spray disinfectant and cleaners for blades and hand tools. I like this product but I jokingly tell people sometimes when I have just used it I think my van smells like my dentists office. I get a lot of my products from either Chewy or groomers choice in Philadelphia they are both reasonable and both deliver.

Retirement/sale/ trainer

Those of you who know me well know I have been thinking about retirement. Between being hit by a freight train two years ago and not being a spring chicken it is time to think about it. When I hired and trained Valerie she worked 3 days a week last year she was supposed to go to four and this year go to five days a week. That didn't happen she doesn't want more days (believe me I have tried). I talked to Valerie about buying the business and taking over she recently told me that doesn't fit her financial plans. If you know anyone who is a groomer or who would like to be a feline groomer or a business owner please give them my number

If I could give a hundred Stars to Anne Marie from Cats Just Cats, I would BUT Google only allows me five stars, so I'll have to settle at five! My cat, can be extremely sensitive to anyone other than who lives in our home. I thought, my cat, who is almost two was going to be difficult to groom but boy was I wrong. Ann Marie can read the cat's body language and she is just excellent at what she does. Ann Marie explained everything so thoroughly, she was so gentle putting my cat into her cat carrier so she could bring him into her van. Anne Marie, came into my house was extremely personable and lovely, she explained her process of what she does from A to Z and answered all of my questions and more, there was no surprises when it came to pricing as well. From here on out I will never use anybody other than Cats Just Cats, to groom my cats. Ann Marie I just want to say thank you for your services and we will spread the word of how excellent you are. I highly recommend cats just cats.

Today I found this review and several others. We encourage reviews people who are not happy with what you do are usually willing to tell anyone who will listen what you did wrong. We encourage you to tell us what you think. If we did good we want to know. If we didn't we need to know. Then so we can look at the situation, it is something we can fix, do we need to change how we do things, Did we not understand what you waned. Did you not understand what we do. One lady wrote a really nasty review because I would not give her cat a rabies shot (sorry I am not a vet). One lady wrote a nasty review when I followed up on it she told me that Stacey had been very rude to her turned out she used a different groomer but would not say that, so I have a negative review for a pet I never did. If we did great please tell others, if we didn't please tell us. so we can learn or fix it,

Health Checks
Groomers are pet health care professionals. We take care of your pet’s skin and coat. We are not licensed to diagnose medical conditions, however, we are going to check for things like signs of ear infections, stud tail, fleas, eye discharge, odor, sores, a**l gland issues, discharge on your pets private parts, scabs, sores, dandruff, flea dirt, and sensitivity. At the end of their grooming, your pet gets a health report on your invoice where we will point out anything we feel is of concern and may recommend you see your vet.
Again, even though we will check for these things, it is important to know that we are not vets and can not legally diagnose your pet. However, if I see that your pet has red sensitive ears, discharge, and a ye**ty smell, I can tell you that these are all signs of an ear infection and suggest that you should take your pet to see their vet.

Quote of the Day
I picked up my cell phone today and the quote of the day was from Mother Theresa. It got me thinking.
Some people come into your life as blessings; some come in your life as lessons.

It's Hot out there.
People ask me if we have air conditioning in our grooming van. I would not be working in it if we didn't. There are actually three air conditioning units in the van that work in different areas of the van.
One works in the area where we have the inverters and the clipper vac unit and other electrical things . One works in the main grooming area, and one works in the cab of the van. We have an excessive heat warning coming soon. If you can get us a spot in the shade it definitely helps, a van even with air conditioning running can get very hot in the sun running equipment. If we are doing nails and you offer to let us do it in your home that can help. We are doing what we can to make us and your pet comfortable. We have a thermometer in the van . A nice little unit that tells us time and temperature among other things. While we do everything we can to make the van cool and comfortable for us and your pet if it is getting to the point where it is too hot for us and your pet to be in the van safely we will call you and reschedule. We do not want to risk either our groomer or your fine furry feline in a too hot van. I am sure you all understand.

Cat Facts
Usually my posts are of a grooming or cat care nature. Today I am doing a different theme cat facts.
1 Your cat's nose print is unique. Just like no 2 humans have the same fingerprints no 2 cats have the same pattern of bumps and ridges. Each cat is unique.
2 Everyone knows cats are nocturnal, right? Wrong, they are crepuscular. They are most active near dawn and dusk; a hang over from their wild roots, these were the best hunting times for their prey.
3 Cats can't taste sweetness. Cats are carnivores their taste buds can't detect sweetness at all. They are not tempted by cake or other sweets.
4 Calico cats are almost always female. It is the X chromosome is where coat color genes are carried only female cats with two X chromosomes can display both orange and black patches.
5 Most orange tabbies are male. Female cats are rarely orange because both of their X chromosomes have to have the orange coat gene for them not to be calico. If you have an orange female she is a rare treasure.
6 Cats understand about 800 words and clearly recognize their name. Whether they respond or not depends on motivation and mood.
7 Cat's purr vibrate at a range of 25-150 hertz. This frequency range is shown to promote tissue and bone healing. Some experts also believe these vibrations may have calming and restorative effects for humans.

My cat is Mean
Can you groom my cat? My cat is mean.
Let's be honest most of the naughty behavior we see isn't because the cat is mean. It may be they are in pain, they are scared, and possibly they never had a chance to learn that grooming can feel good.
Here are some common reasons that cats who are rarely groomed act out.
- Pain, they are in pain from mats pulling on their skin and restricting their movement
- Fear, their are afraid from being handled in unfamiliar ways
- Sensitivity, they are sensitive from unaddressed skin conditions
- Panic aversion to loud noises or restraint
- Lack of familiarity, a strange person, taking me to a strange place, and they are doing what?
All of these are made worse when grooming is done infrequently. With consistency cats get a chance to learn and adapt. Cats may learn to enjoy the groom or at least how they feel after they are groomed. As the groomer we try to solve the current issue and suggest how we can try to prevent it from happening again.
Occasionally a cat may have had trauma, or medical issues and might require a vet to prescribe something to help it relax, if a cat is feral and does not allow human contact we are not able to groom it safely. Most times though your cat is not mean they have just never had the chance to learn that grooming can feel good.

Maintenance
Your matted kitty was groomed. The price we charged should have been higher than the normal groom as the price should reflect the extra time and risk involved in the groom, the extra skill required to safely handle the cat.
Now that your kitty was groomed lets talk about maintenance, we have a clean slate lets talk about how we can prevent them from happening again. Normally maintenance should take place in around 8 weeks. Maintenance will help the coat grow back healthier. Cats that only come in when matted or in pain tend to get overwhelmed Regular visits are shorter, easier and much less stressful.
Maintenance lets us check on the coat as it grows in. It helps us and the kitty work on desensitization and better handling choices. It lets us keep the nails and hind end under control and possibly catch any area of concern before they become a problem. It gives the cat a positive lower stress grooming experience. Also when we check on how they are doing, and how the coat is growing in, then we can schedule the next full groom at a time that works with the cat's schedule and the owner's convenience.
(I personally would like to see a bath done with maintenance but this is totally up to the owner)
We are always willing to answer questions. I tell people "my job is to help you take great care of your pets." I mean it.
