🚨 The shelter is at critical capacity. We need your help this week.

Every kennel at Petersburg Animal Care and Control is full, and supplies are running out faster than we can restock them. When the shelter is this full, the basics are what stand between a hard week and a crisis.

Our most urgent needs right now:

🐕 Dog food (our dogs eat Purina One, but the community needs have risen as well so we will take any brand to support the pantry)
🐈 Cat food (our cats also eat Purina One, but the community needs have risen so we will take any brand to support the pantry)
🪵 Pine pellets (we use them for cat litter)
🧴 Bleach
🧼 Rescue disinfectant cleaner

🐾 HELP US KEEP PETS WITH THE FAMILIES WHO LOVE THEM 🐾

Right now, the community pet food pantry at Petersburg Animal Care and Control is being utilized more than ever before.

Families in our community are struggling. Rising costs, housing instability, job loss, and unexpected hardships are forcing many people to make impossible choices, and we are seeing more and more pet owners turning to the pantry for help simply trying to keep food in their pets’ bowls.

For many families, this pantry is the difference between keeping a beloved pet or surrendering them to a shelter.

We urgently need donations of dog and cat food to continue supporting our community and preventing animals from losing their homes.

Donations can be dropped off at the shelter Monday–Friday from 10am–3pm.

Hot off the press and landing in your inbox, our very first PAWS newsletter is here! 🐾📬

This first edition is packed with exciting updates about real progress for the animals in our city. After years of advocacy and dedication, long awaited improvements to the shelter are finally moving forward. These changes will directly impact the comfort, safety, and overall wellbeing of the dogs and cats who depend on us. ❤️

Inside, you will also find meaningful ways to be part of the impact. From sponsoring spay and neuter surgeries and medical care 🩺, to supporting training programs that help dogs build confidence and structure 🐕‍🦺, to helping provide consistent, high quality nutrition 🍲, every contribution helps create brighter futures.

And here is something we are especially excited about: a mobile adoption trailer is coming soon! 🚐🐶 This will allow adoptable pets to get out into the community at festivals and events, giving them more visibility, more adventures, and more chances to find loving homes. 🏡✨

Free straw bedding is again available at the entry gate of Petersburg Animal Care & Control for dog houses and cat houses. The straw is packaged in black bags for quick and clean loading into your vehicle.

As colder weather and another winter storms approach, we hope this helps keep your pets warm and comfortable. Please take what you need, and stay safe!

❄️ As the winter storm of the decade is expected to begin this evening, Spearmint suddenly needed urgent medical care. 🐾

Over the past few days, Spearmint’s respiratory symptoms have been escalating. Today, ahead of the incoming storm, her foster noticed something concerning. 😔 Spearmint’s gums had turned pale, and to be safe, her foster took her to UrgentVet right away.

Veterinarians have recommended urgent diagnostics to determine what is going on and how best to help her. The estimate for these tests came back at $1,400. 🩺 These diagnostics are an important step in making sure Spearmint gets the care she needs and can recover comfortably.

PAWS remains committed to providing medical care for animals when unexpected situations arise, even as extreme weather approaches. 🐶💙 But we depend on our community to make that possible.
