Adorable or uncomfortable? Sweet or stressed?

Back in 2006, I thought this picture of my new puppy was absolutely adorable—look at that face! Fast forward to today, and I realize he wasn’t giving me a “hey, look how cute I am!” moment, but rather a “uh, I’m feeling really uncomfortable here” vibe. 😬

Turns out, the Whale Eye (when your pup turns their head just slightly away but their eyes stay locked on you) is actually a sign of stress – anxiety, fear or discomfort—not a mischievous wink, as I once thought! 🐶👀

Our furry friends are always sending us little signals. I just wish I had known that back then, so I could’ve given him the space he needed! Dogs really do have their own way of talking to us—if we only knew how to listen.
