Some dogs come with scars you can’t always see.

Moxie is proof that fear can coexist with strength.

Rescued, and miraculously—on the very day of transport—she had a puppy. She saved that baby by keeping her pregnancy a secret.

She didn’t know who would be kind. She just knew she had to be brave.

Now her story is about learning what trust feels like—and finding the safety she was always meant to have. ❤️

Moxie was able to start trusting as she raised her baby in a foster home, which happened to just coincidentally be with a member of CITT. She didn’t understand the soft beds or the gentle touches at first… but she loved them anyway.

After raising her baby, she was adopted—and then she ran away after almost a month. If you remember her story from January, she was missing for a week, and thankfully CITT was able to trap her and bring her back.

She was returned a few months later, but she didn’t stay without love for long. A very patient, loving family scooped her up—and just a few weeks later, with an accidental door being open, she saw her chance and darted again.

But this time, her people were determined. Her parents (and their friends) were bound and determined to bring her back to safety, already building a strong bond and wanting their baby home. They reached out to CITT—and we knew what we were in for. Trapping a dog once is one thing… trapping the same dog again is another.

Thankfully, with the dedication and support we had after two weeks, Moxie was back home again.

And now—the best part…
something changed. Something is different.

All of a sudden, she’s doing dog things. She’s doing dog things—being happy, following others, and barking. We know her family has finally broken through her wall, and she realizes this is the life she deserves.

Her family is now a family.

We were proud to be part of her journey to safety and the realization that she is HOME. Over the last month she has made tremendous progress thanks to the dedication and love of her family.

Welcome Home, Abby! 🐾❤️
It takes a village, an incredible drone team, and a whole lot of patience to bring a lost dog home. After days of tension, sleepless nights, and close calls, we are overjoyed to share that Abby is finally safe and sound.
Here is the story of her incredible journey back to home:

Abby’s adventure started on a stressful note when she slipped her collar right after arriving at her home near N. University and N. Miramar Dr. in Peoria. We were called in to help about 2–3 days later.

The first major lead came when she was spotted entering a field at W. Altorfer Dr. and N. Allen Rd. We immediately called in the experts at Shadow Hound Drone Services. They deployed to search the field, but unfortunately, Abby had already moved on.

Several quiet days passed with agonizingly no word on her whereabouts. Then, a breakthrough: she was spotted off Rte 29 and NE Skyline Dr.
We eventually tracked her to a solar farm across from that location. Just as we caught sight of her, she vanished into the surrounding tall grass. Once again, the Shadow Hounds crew stepped up, rushed to the scene, and successfully located her hiding under a bush!

Unfortunately, initial rescue efforts failed. Knowing how close we were to the heavy traffic on Route 29, we didn't want to risk spooking her onto the highway. We shifted our strategy entirely to trapping. Over the next few days, we set traps in various areas, but Abby proved to be incredibly elusive—a situation made much harder because well-meaning people kept chasing her.

⚠️ A quick reminder for future searches: Chasing a lost dog almost always drives them further away and puts them in danger. Please always report sightings instead of pursuing!

May 26th, a sighting on Wayne Rd. brought Shadow Hounds out yet again. In a stroke of luck, the drone team actually spotted Abby from their vehicle while driving to their launch location!

They quickly got their drone airborne and monitored her as she ran under a gate onto a Caterpillar building property and hid underneath some trailers. We set a trap on one side of the gate, but Abby managed to bypass it.

Yesterday (May 27th), the drama continued. Abby was spotted in a field next to the Caterpillar building, once again being chased. When we arrived on the scene, we watched her slip right back underneath that familiar gate.

This time, we outsmarted her. We set a trap on the other side of the gate, stepped back, and waited. Shortly after... SUCCESS! The trap secured her safely.

Abby is finally back where she belongs: safe at home. Tomorrow, she is headed to the vet for a full check-up to ensure her health is good and her incisions are perfectly intact.

47 Days, 2 States of Mind, and 1 Incredible Journey: Welcome Home, Cheddar! 🐾❤️

On April 9th, a sweet boy named Cheddar went missing from Brimfield, IL, sparking a grueling 47-day marathon to bring him safely home. After a couple of weeks of his owners working with another organization, they reached out and asked if we could take over the search. We were more than happy to step in and help.

The breakthrough started with a recent sighting. His owner, Jake, was out setting up a feeding station in a field where Cheddar had been spotted when the unthinkable happened—he saw Cheddar with his own eyes! Jake tried everything to lure him over, but Cheddar’s survival instincts were on high alert, and he bolted into the dense woods instead.

Knowing we needed proper support, we called in Dan from Shadow Hound Drone Services to search the canopy with his drone. Dan didn't hesitate to oblige, and within minutes of launching, he located Cheddar lying down deep in the timber.

Hoping to break him out of survival mode, we brought in his absolute favorite person, Kate, along with his canine brother, Angus. We positioned them upwind, hoping the familiar scents and barks would draw him out.

Unfortunately, fear held a tight grip on Cheddar, and it didn't work. We quickly pivoted, setting two traps in different directions before pulling out of the area to give him space.

Cheddar didn't return to that area. Days passed with agonizing silence until we were alerted that he had traveled a few miles west. For days, we played high-stakes chess with a ghost—moving feeding stations along creeks and train tracks where we could get property owner permission, tracking his path, but failing to get him to show on camera.

Then came Memorial Day, May 25th. We received Ring camera footage that blew our minds: Cheddar had traveled a staggering 17 miles east of his last sighting in just five days. He was moving fast, and he was on a mission.

Jake immediately mobilized, moving signs and feeding stations to the new area. The very next day, another Ring camera captured Cheddar traveling the exact same path. For the first time in 47 days, we had the holy grail of pet recovery: patterned behavior. He had visited the same place twice in two days.

Soon after, a neighbor across the street sent in Ring footage showing Cheddar on their property, too. We knew this was our shot, and we weren't taking any chances. We deployed two different setups: a standard box trap at one house, and a Missy trap at the other.

That night, we waited on pins and needles, staring at our phones for camera alerts. Sure enough, the notification dinged. Cheddar had arrived at the Missy trap!

He didn't hesitate. He quickly scarfed down the safety bait on the outside, stepped into the trap to get the rest, and tripped the sensor. The door snapped shut. Secured.

Jake was on the scene in a flash. He was able to safely enter the enclosure, get a slip lead over Cheddar, and get him loaded into the truck. The nightmare was finally over.

Back home, Cheddar was showered with an incredibly emotional welcome from his family, who had missed him desperately for nearly seven weeks. The following day, he visited the vet for a thorough checkup. Aside from needing to put some weight back on, we are thrilled to report that Cheddar is healthy, safe, and going to be completely okay.

47 days on the run is an eternity for a lost dog, but Cheddar proved just how resilient he is.

🐾 Bambi’s Journey: From Midnight Mystery to Safe and Sound 🐾

Late last night, we received an alert about a mysterious stray dog running around our friend Emily’s neighborhood in Peoria. The poor pup was clearly terrified—barking into the darkness and bolting the second anyone tried to get close. Because it was pitch black, it was impossible to get a visual on her, but Emily wisely left out food and water to keep her in the area overnight.

First thing this morning, we headed out to see if we could spot her. It didn’t take long—just a couple of houses down from Emily’s, we spotted her lying down, completely exhausted. Knowing she was in high-alert "survival mode," we didn't try to chase or call her. Instead, we immediately set up a trap and quietly backed down the alley to monitor the situation from a safe distance.

It turned out the delicious scent of the goodies inside the trap was exactly what she needed. She ran right up to it, but then the hesitation set in. For a tense 30 minutes, she paced, sniffed, and thoroughly investigated the setup from every angle, trying to decide if the risk was worth the reward. Finally, she made her choice and committed.

Click. The door securely shut.

When we approached, she was lying there completely still—defeated, scared, and dead silent. But a little patience and a few tasty treats go a long way. Within minutes, she started to warm up just enough for us to safely slip a lead on her and guide her out of the trap.
While she is incredibly timid, it’s already clear that she is a very sweet soul. She is in pretty rough physical shape from her time on the streets, but her days of running are over.

We are calling this precious girl Bambi. She is currently safe, warm, and finally beginning to decompress and relax. She will be doing her official stray hold in an experienced, loving foster home through Pet Central Helps and is scheduled to be evaluated by a veterinarian ASAP.

On May 7th, we received a message from our friend Malinda over at Grafelman Farms. A stray dog had been hanging around her property since the night before, and while Malinda spent the morning trying to win her over with a slip lead, she eventually had to call for backup.

When we arrived, it was clear this girl felt right at home—she was guarding the property as if it were her own! We quickly set the trap and moved down the street to give her some space. After about 45 minutes of suspense, she finally stepped inside.

We moved her to a secured area to safely scan for a chip, and we were thrilled to get a hit! We learned her name is Storm and were able to get a hold of her owners immediately. They were incredibly relieved and rushed over to bring her home.

A Pawsitive Ending: Ziggy’s Journey Home

On April 25th, a simple walk took a terrifying turn for Jackie and her dog, Ziggy. While her son was cleaning up after him, Ziggy became startled and bolted, ripping the leash right out of his hands and disappearing into the distance.

As soon as we heard the news, we jumped into action. Ziggy was spotted heading toward the local ravines—notoriously difficult terrain for a recovery. We called in Shadow Hound Drone Services for aerial drone support to help us navigate the steep landscape. They successfully located him deep within a ravine, but the rugged environment made it impossible to implement standard calming methods.

We moved to Plan B: Patience and Provision.
• Feeding Stations: We established multiple stations throughout the ravines, hoping to anchor him to a specific area. However, Ziggy remained elusive and didn't show at the locations.

• The Breakthrough: Five days into the search, a fresh sighting changed everything. Ziggy had moved out of the ravines and onto a secluded piece of private property with zero human activity.

• The Decision: After several unsuccessful attempts to contact the property owners, we knew time was of the essence. We made the tactical decision to set a trap in the heart of the property where he felt safest.

The wait wasn't long. Within just a few hours, Ziggy appeared on our cellular camera. For 15 tense minutes, we watched him "scope out" the trap, cautiously testing the area. Finally, he felt comfortable enough to step inside, thankfully trapped.

We headed to the site immediately to keep him calm and called Jackie. We asked her to meet us at the location without revealing the big news just yet.

The moment Jackie pulled up and saw Ziggy safe and sound, the emotions took over. There wasn't a dry eye in the area as she burst into tears of pure joy and relief. After days of uncertainty and navigating the toughest terrain, this resilient pup was finally back where he belonged.

From a Frozen Field to a Fresh Start: Ellie’s Journey 🐾

Sometimes, the best things in life take a little time, a lot of patience, and a whole community of caring hearts. Meet Ellie, a 5-month-old soul who has officially traded the cold fields of Elliot, IL, for the warmth of a soft bed.
The Backstory

Ellie first appeared in early February, wandering a field with a sibling by her side. Sadly, her companion hasn't been seen in a month, leaving Ellie to brave the elements alone. Frequenting Miranda’s backyard, Miranda and her friend Katie from The Dog House stepped up, feeding her regularly and beginning the long process of earning her trust.

When we were notified about a stray in the area last week, we headed out Monday with a mission. After a bit of searching, we connected with Miranda, who had been tirelessly trying to trap her. With her blessing, we set a professional trap right next to hers and waited.
The result? Success! On Tuesday morning, Ellie decided she was ready. She walked straight into the trap, signaling the end of her days as a stray.

True to her heritage, Ellie has that signature Shar-Pei stubbornness and is a bit skittish around new faces at first. But underneath that cautious exterior is a total sweetheart.

• Medical Update: She had her first round of shots today and handled them like a total pro!

• The "Tail" of Progress: She has already started wagging her tail the moment she sees her caretaker, realizing that she is safe, fed, and finally loved.

Ellie is currently being pampered by a wonderful friend of ours while she awaits a formal rescue placement. We are so incredibly grateful to Miranda and Katie for keeping her belly full until we could get her to safety.
Ellie’s "scary" days are over, and we can’t wait to see the amazing life that waits for her. Welcome to the good life, sweet girl!

The Great Escape: Gracie Mae’s Journey Home

The panic of a lost pet is a feeling like no other, especially when that pet is a shy soul like Gracie Mae. On April 18th, this skittish beagle managed a Houdini-style exit through a partially cracked car window while parked in a family member’s driveway. Because she was still wearing her leash and harness, our hearts sank—the woods behind the house are thick, and the fear of her getting snagged on brush or tangled in the undergrowth was a very real, terrifying possibility.

Immediate searches of the area yielded nothing but quiet trees. Knowing Gracie’s nervous temperament, we shifted tactics quickly. That same evening, we set a "feeding station" trap with the door locked open and a cellular camera monitoring the yard.

The strategy paid off. Early this morning, April 20th, the camera pinged—Gracie was back, sniffing cautiously around the trap.

We immediately mobilized her owner, Nina. Armed with high-value snacks and coached on calming signals—staying low, avoiding eye contact, and letting the dog bridge the gap—Nina headed into the pitch-black driveway. At first, there was no sign of her; the darkness offered a thousand hiding spots for a small beagle.

After 15 minutes of patient, quiet waiting, Nina took a chance and flicked on her headlights. There, illuminated in the beams like a tiny star, was Gracie. Using the treats and a soft voice, Nina successfully lured her close enough to safely secure her in the car.
It was a long 48 hours, but the combination of tech, patience, and Nina’s steady nerves brought this girl in from the cold.
