I wrote a book called Lessons from the Round Pen: Where Faith and Horsemanship Intersect. This book is comprised of 30 Lessons and Faith based horsemanship.
This book is not a trainers manual for the Horse. It’s a testimony of the insights God used to draw me closer to him. The horsemanship principles are simply the language he chose to speak through to me.
Below is an excerpt from Lesson 1, Establishing Direction
Abby was around three years old when her owner brought her in. She had been captured in a big summit wild horse territory in Oregon the year before. She was a draft size Mustang and came to me being afraid of everything and not wanting to move. She was uncertain and craved leadership after supplying that leadership, within two weeks, my daughter was able to ride her.
Horses crave clarity when you send a horse forward she needs to know exactly where to go. If your body language is vague, she drifts. If your cues are inconsistent, she hesitates. If your intention is unclear, she becomes anxious. We are not so different.
Isaiah 30: 21 promises that God speaks direction into our wandering. “Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, this is the way, walk in it, whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left.”
God doesn’t want us wandering and drifting through life. He wants us to move with purpose, confidence, and clarity.
I once heard a trainer say, “ We need to give clear direction and then impulsion.” Just as the Horse learns to follow your lead, you learn to follow God’s lead. Sometimes the problem isn’t that God isn’t speaking, it’s that we are not focused on listening. There are too many other things fighting for our attention. We want God‘s will, but we also want our comfort. We want his direction, but we also want control. The round pen teaches us this: clarity creates confidence, confidence creates connection and connection creates partnership.
Today ask God to establish your direction. Where do you feel spiritually directionless? What helps you hear God‘s voice?
Pray for clarity and obedience. Lord, guide my steps today let me understand your clear cues and help me to submit to your leadership.
