We strive to show the real, raw side of horse training and stock handling from a perspective never before documented. Every video on this site is uncut, unedited, and authentic. Ranching, roping, starting colts, and horse training are dying arts in today's world. Richard Boatwright is a lifelong student of horses and cattle and his genuine love for his craft is evident in these videos. Dust, mud,

sweat, failure and success is all part of life with livestock and B1 shows it all. From the first day in the round pen with a salty filly to ranch work horseback and roping, it's here. How To Watch
There are basically 2 ways to watch B1 content. The first way is to scroll through our previews and select out the individual videos that look appealing to you. This is a good way to get the content you want quickly. The second and best way is to pick a horse you like and binge watch the entire series. This way you'll get the real picture of what the process looks like and you'll be sure to not miss anything. Our "Tips" category is where you can find advice, hacks, thoughts, and philosophy taken straight from the long form videos. We will be continuously uploading new content as we have a huge amount of raw footage stockpiled from hours of work both in the round pen and out on the ranch. We sincerely hope that B1 horsemanship adds value to your life as well as the livestock in your care. Please feel free to leave comments and suggestions or contact us with any questions you might have.

Let her step over the heel trap
The rope swings in front of her hind feet and he just lets her step over it.
No big deal made of it. No pulling it away. She steps over, life goes on. That's how you build a horse that isn't worried about ropes around their feet. Exposure without drama. Over and over until it's nothing.

Right leg position three. That's the one we struggle with.
The right side is always the harder one with Luna. So Richard doesn't skip it — he spends more time there.
Left hip swings around easy. Right hip needs a little help. He asks, waits, gives her a chance to find it herself, then helps just enough to get it. When that hip hustles around he releases everything immediately. That's the deal.

Another Day another Dollar
Never know what you’re going to find out there..

It’s Luna’s turn to get some work in. So far just the boys have been getting the majority of the work. Since Cash and Tuff are kicked out it’s Lunas turn to pick up the slack. She’s been riding great in the arena this winter but now it’s time to apply it.

Let her buck. Let her kick. Let her figure it out.
She's got the flank rope on and she's not happy about it.
That's fine. Let her go. Let her buck and kick all she wants. She's not going to affect anybody in the least. Every time she comes back and gives her attention the pressure comes off. She's learning that bucking and kicking isn't going to get her anywhere and that coming back is where the relief is.

Leg yields. More forward than lateral?
She's going more forward than lateral off the leg. So Richard catches her with the rein, corrects her, and asks again.
No escalation. No getting more aggressive with the leg. A gentle reminder that the leg means move over not move forward. Then he checks the rear end before moving on. You don't skip ahead just because one thing felt good.

Do these boys look happy or what.. Cash and Tuff have their first week of real work under their belts and now they are getting turned out for a week. It’s like letting the kids camp out in the backyard away from everyone else and coming to check on them.

If you let go when she's kicking you teach her to kick
The timing of the release is everything.
Let go when she's kicking and you just told her that kicking gets the pressure off. Now you've got a horse that kicks every time she feels pressure around her flank. Wait for the stop. Release when she stops. That's what she learns from.

Breaktime: 5/0’s first time roping anything more than a calf today.
What do you think of the Cabin?

06/01/2026

Haunches in / leg positions / nose to tail
Most people think of leg yields as an English thing.
Richard calls it bringing the nose to the tail. Shortening everything up until the horse is shaped like a C, nose and tail coming together. That's haunches in. And it's one of the best things you can do for your horse.
Leg one controls the shoulders. Leg two controls everything laterally. Leg three controls the hip. Get all three working together and you've got a horse that can do just about anything. Lead departures, loping circles, working cattle. It all comes from the same place.
