One of the more controversial articles that I've written is one about every horseman and especially every professional horseman should compete. Competition and judging from your peers gives you true feedback on the quality of your riding, training, and your program as a whole. Without this feedback, there is no true evaluation of the quality of your work. True, you may have happy clients, but that does not tell you where you can improve and be better. As horsemen, we should always be improving ourselves. I am in Jackson, MS, judging the Heart of the Horse horseman challenge. Every exhibitor here has done a great job, but the experience has made every person a better horseman and trainer. I always get pushback about this opinion. However, those of us who compete know the true value and are improving our programs. Those who do not are getting left behind.
