Time for another review & recall! Maybe that is what I will call this series?
Miss Legend has been a consistent part of my life for the last six years. In a lot of ways I learned the in’s and out’s of working with reactivity through working with Legend every week. While certifications look good, there is a certain importance in knowing how to move past them and read the needs of each of your clients outside of the textbook setting. Legend is a perfect example of where sometimes we need to make adjustments to properly accommodate the families we serve and meet them where they are.
Legend gets bullied in her neighborhood… a lot. People do not care for her boundaries and when her reactivity sparks up because she feels threatened, often times some of her neighbors will further taunt her, which puts everyone involved into a dangerous situation. Right now I am between renewing my Fear Free Certification and it is pups like Legend that make me wonder if it’s worth it. Treats & enrichment do not always get control of the situation. Consistency, routine, and systems are wonderful, but they are not going to keep Legend safe when someone is not respecting her space and actively popping her bubble while she is trying to communicate her needs. They just don’t speak her language. Hell, maybe they do- they simply don’t care.
This is a key factor in what makes trust so important in this industry. There have been multiple times I have, quite frankly, had to be extremely stern with strangers to ensure Legend was safe and was allowed the space and respect she needs to regulate.
As pet professionals, we have a duty to speak up for them where they cannot speak for themselves. And I will do it again, and again, and again-
Because pups like Lege deserve to be heard.
While not related to this story, I have also had the absolute honor getting to know Legend’s two feline brothers. Cloudy has left us and we all miss him dearly. Stormy greets me and meows at me when I walk in; Demanding belly rubs, which is an extremely high honor!!
thank you for trusting me with your family for the better half of the last decade. I look forward to the second half. ♥️🐾
