Time for another review & recall! Maybe that is what I will call this series?

Miss Legend has been a consistent part of my life for the last six years. In a lot of ways I learned the in’s and out’s of working with reactivity through working with Legend every week. While certifications look good, there is a certain importance in knowing how to move past them and read the needs of each of your clients outside of the textbook setting. Legend is a perfect example of where sometimes we need to make adjustments to properly accommodate the families we serve and meet them where they are.

Legend gets bullied in her neighborhood… a lot. People do not care for her boundaries and when her reactivity sparks up because she feels threatened, often times some of her neighbors will further taunt her, which puts everyone involved into a dangerous situation. Right now I am between renewing my Fear Free Certification and it is pups like Legend that make me wonder if it’s worth it. Treats & enrichment do not always get control of the situation. Consistency, routine, and systems are wonderful, but they are not going to keep Legend safe when someone is not respecting her space and actively popping her bubble while she is trying to communicate her needs. They just don’t speak her language. Hell, maybe they do- they simply don’t care.

This is a key factor in what makes trust so important in this industry. There have been multiple times I have, quite frankly, had to be extremely stern with strangers to ensure Legend was safe and was allowed the space and respect she needs to regulate.

As pet professionals, we have a duty to speak up for them where they cannot speak for themselves. And I will do it again, and again, and again-

Because pups like Lege deserve to be heard.

While not related to this story, I have also had the absolute honor getting to know Legend’s two feline brothers. Cloudy has left us and we all miss him dearly. Stormy greets me and meows at me when I walk in; Demanding belly rubs, which is an extremely high honor!!

thank you for trusting me with your family for the better half of the last decade. I look forward to the second half. ♥️🐾

It’s a good Saturday to be an overnight pet sitter in Parker, Colorado!

I have been working with Nakita for almost a year now? That’s wild actually. Woah. I am one of multiple people who walk this sweet lady, but this was actually our first overnight! She definitely has more energy for her walks in the morning. Our afternoon walks are primarily to relieve and to acquire a stick.

P.S. Her stick this morning was too short to photograph, but do not be fooled! She still found one. 😆

Do you keep a designated “muddy paws” towel?

If you do… two questions: was it a beach towel and when did it get retired?

Sometimes pet care is tidy, sometimes it’s messy. At Familair Pet Care I prepare myself to expect either, on any day of the week, because it is important to let your animals, well… be animals!

P.S. This post was brought to you by Riley after the rain. He got his paws wiped before we went back inside for the day.

•Review & Story•

I’ve decided that client reviews are also going to be a story time special! Goodness knows you have a story or few after working with the same animal for multiple years.

I’ve been watching Luna for a while now. 4 or 5 years?Admittedly I should keep better track of when I started working with different clients, but it all blurs together as time goes on.

Miss Lu is a mama’s girl. She LOVES her mama and the activities she shares with her ma are not necessarily activities she enjoys with everyone, but we didn’t find that out right away. It took ages of following Alaina’s directions while also doing my best to respect what I felt Luna was trying to communicate when she would retire under her mom’s bed, and in turn communicating what we were seeing at the stay back to her mom.

There are social cats out there, Luna is not necessarily one of them. The thing with cats is they really need consent. They need time, they need respect. It took consistency and a respect for her body language for her to finally start popping out longer, for her to come over and ask for pets, or to finally feel comfortable enough to go for the hunt when she saw me with one of her toys. It was the best feeling when she asked for tummy rubs for the first time!!!!

And that kept up for a couple of years! But the thing with time is it changes us. Maybe in different ways, but the things we love, the places we find most comfortable, and the activities we fill our time with change. That is not something that only applies to humans. Our animal companions experience those changes too.

As Luna has gotten older she has become a lot less playful when her mom is away. She will play for a bit, or maybe ask for pets, but nowadays she reaches a limit and retires under her mom’s bed when she is done with company. It’s very relatable, honestly!

I miss our play time or making her little forts in her younger years, but there is also something really special about the little moments we get now as she ages. Those things that show the years we have spent getting to know one another. Maybe things have changed, maybe we aren’t the same anymore, but the journey has been worth it. 🐈‍⬛♥️🐾
