What can a dog's nose teach us about genetics? Quite a lot, actually.

Take a look at these two Australian Labradoodles. One has black pigment and the other has brown. Both are beautiful, but the difference is a wonderful little genetics lesson.

In our latest GALA Genetics/Color Education Series, we're taking something that can sound complicated, the B locus and TYRP1 gene, and making it easy to understand.

You'll learn why a black-pigmented dog can secretly carry brown, how two black-pigmented parents can produce a brown-pigmented puppy, and what breeders mean when they use terms such as BB, Bb, and bb.

Don't worry. No genetics degree required. 😊

We've even included a simple Punnett square to show how Mom and Dad each contribute to a puppy's pigment genetics.

Understanding color genetics is useful and fascinating for breeders, but it also gives us an opportunity to reinforce something we believe strongly at GALA:

Color is something to appreciate. Yet, we primarily breed for health, temperament, sound structure, and genetic diversity.

I recently wrote this post for GALA, the Global Australian Labradoodle Association, a new association I founded together with a group of dedicated Australian Labradoodle breeders.

As I wrote it, I found myself thinking about all the wonderful guardian families who have been part of our program over the years. We are so grateful for you. You opened your homes and hearts to our dogs and became an important part of their lives—and ours.

We feel the same gratitude for every family who has welcomed one of our puppies into their home. One of the greatest joys of breeding has always been hearing from you and watching the puppies we raised grow into beloved members of your families. ❤️

From time to time, I'll be sharing some of the educational posts and blogs I write for GALA here as well. I hope you'll enjoy following along!

It Takes a Family 🐾

Behind many wonderful Australian Labradoodles is a very special person or family who open their home and heart to a breeding dog.

Often called host or guardian families, these families allow breeding dogs to grow up where dogs belong: in a home, as beloved members of a family.

Rather than living in a kennel simply because they are part of a breeding program, these dogs spend their lives going on walks, sleeping on couches, playing with children, traveling with their families, and receiving all the individual attention that helps them thrive.

For responsible breeders, host families also become valued partners. They help us know our dogs as more than pedigrees and health-test results. We learn how they mature, how they interact with people, and what their temperaments are really like in everyday life.

And sometimes something even bigger happens: a community forms.

This wonderful gathering of host families from GALA member Patty Bakker in the Netherlands is a beautiful example. These are some of the people who help make a thoughtful breeding program possible and who give breeding dogs something even more important: a family of their own. ❤️

To all the host and guardian families who love these dogs every day, drive to appointments, accommodate breeding schedules, celebrate puppies they helped bring into the world, and occasionally rearrange their own lives for ours—thank you.

Responsible breeding truly is a partnership.

A Labor of Love ❤️

For an Australian Labradoodle mother, raising puppies is quite literally a labor of love. And sometimes, being Mom means becoming the pillow, too.

Behind every litter is another kind of labor—the breeder who carefully plans the pairing, watches over Mom, welcomes each tiny puppy into the world, and then spends weeks nurturing, socializing, cleaning, feeding, worrying, learning...and loving.

Responsible breeding is certainly work. But for those who dedicate themselves to doing it well, it is work with purpose.

And judging by this peaceful little family, Mom may agree that some of the best work deserves a good nap afterward. 😊

For mothers and dedicated breeders, every litter truly is a labor of love.

Protect Your Heart—and Your Puppy 🐾

Finding a puppy should be exciting. Unfortunately, puppy scammers know exactly how to take advantage of that excitement.

Recently, several breeders we know have heard from heartbroken families who lost thousands of dollars to scammers advertising puppies that never existed. The websites looked legitimate. The puppy photos were irresistible. The conversations seemed real—until the requests for money kept coming.

One young man even lost money his grandmother had given him toward his dream puppy. By the time he realized there was no puppy waiting at the airport, the scammer and his money were gone.

So how can you protect yourself?

Slow down. Ask questions. Verify the breeder. Meet by video if you can't visit in person. And be especially cautious when someone creates urgency or suddenly asks for additional money.

A responsible breeder won't be offended by your questions. They'll be glad you're asking them.

We've put together a new GALA educational article, “How to Avoid Puppy Scams: Finding a Breeder You Can Trust,” with practical ways to recognize warning signs—and, just as importantly, recognize a responsible breeder.

Being this adorable is exhausting. 🥱🐾

The world is still very new for this tiny Australian Labradoodle—mostly a wonderful cycle of eating, sleeping, growing, and being lovingly cared for.

Behind these sleepy little moments is a breeder watching closely, providing warmth and nutrition, tracking development, and giving each puppy the best possible start in life.

For now, though, this little one has an important job to finish: that yawn. ❤️
