We were honored with the responsibility of finding a "house dog" for the Touch of Grey Rescue "Landings".

We have our house dog 🤎

This big lug was born on February 7, 2019. Touch of Grey Rescue was officially incorporated on February 11, 2019…just four days later. Once again the stars align 💫

Now, 7 years later…Rocky Balboa is our official house dog, brand ambassador, and future therapy dog. We will celebrate our birthdays together as he helps share our mission, support our Golden Souls and Pawsitive Pals programs, and welcome big dogs, little dogs, sick dogs, special-needs dogs, and old dogs to The Landing. With his happy wiggle butt, and predictable presence, Rocky will help every dog who walks through our doors feel safe, loved, and at home.

A huge thank you to Ambassadors Dog Training for finding this incredible boy, personally delivering him to us, and sponsoring his therapy dog certification and training. Stay tuned as we share his journey toward becoming an official therapy dog. 🤎🐾

We are also incredibly grateful to Eau Gallie Veterinary Hospital for generously sponsoring his first veterinary visit. Once again, our community comes through. ❤️‍🩹

Now for the important question…

When we opened our doors in 2014, our focus was simple: advocate for bully breeds and help owners build better relationships with their dogs through education and training.

Since then, we've worked with hundreds of dogs from every breed, background, and behavior level. What we discovered is that our mission was never just about one type of dog—it was about helping dogs and their people succeed together.

Our new name reflects the work we've been doing for years and the future we're building.

🐾 From Unknown Past to a Confident Future: Meet Oliver! 🐾

When Oliver’s family adopted him from a rescue, they welcomed a sweet soul with a blank behavioral history. Like many rescue dogs, his past triggers, stress thresholds, and bite inhibition were a total mystery.

The reality set in quickly: whenever Oliver saw another dog he would explode into aggressive barking and lunging. His strength made addressing this behavior a top priority!

🐾 Scout’s Journey: Day 9 of 14 🐾

From chaos to calm. 💥 ➡️ 🧘‍♂️

Scout is a high-drive, working-line dog. These dogs possess incredible focus and energy, but without the right guidance, that drive can easily manifest as chaotic behavior.

Here is how we are transforming Scout's intense energy into manageable, balanced behavior using three core pillars:

🔹 Patterning
We created predictable routines. By structuring his environment, Scout learned exactly what behavior opens doors, earns food, and gains attention. Predictability lowers anxiety and eliminates the need for chaotic guessing games.

🔹 Repetition
Consistency is key. We practice the same foundation skills hundreds of times in low-distraction environments before leveling up. Repetition builds muscle memory, transforming a forced command into an automatic choice.

🔹 Patience
Working lines do not change overnight. We do not rush the process or match his high energy with frustration. By staying calm and waiting out the chaos, we show Scout that relaxation is the only path to a reward.Five days left in his program, and the results speak for themselves. Scout is learning how to switch off and just be a dog.

Understanding Toy Drive: Toy drive is a dog's natural, genetic desire to chase, catch, and possess objects.

Root Origin: This behavior stems directly from the predatory hunting sequence (search, stalk, chase, bite).

High Drive: Dogs with high toy drive find toys intrinsically rewarding, requiring no food treats for motivation.

The Danger: Unregulated toy drive easily morphs into obsessive-fixative behavior, bypassing the dog's self-preservation instincts.

Scout's Behavior:
Drive vs. Obsession
Healthy Drive: A healthy dog works for the toy but can disengage when commanded.

Scout's Obsession: Scout experiences hyper-arousal, causing a total shutdown of his cognitive functions.

Physical Risks: His fixation blocks pain signals, leading to torn paw pads and dangerous over-exhaustion.

Mental State: The ball acts as a psychological trigger, trapping his brain in a frantic, compulsive feedback loop.

Implementing Self-Regulation Skills and Impulse Control: Teaching Scout that calmness, not hyperactive demand, makes the ball active.

Arousal Regulation: We practice capping his arousal by asking for stationary commands (e.g., "sit") while the ball is visible.

Decompression Time: We implement mandatory breaks during play to lower his heart rate and cortisol levels.
