I have spent many days trying to come up with the words to share this bitter news. In all honesty it had broken me as it was paired with the surprise loss of Little Momma. The most recent intakes were a Mom and Son pair of Donkeys named Dominic and Momma. She turned out to be pregnant and went into labor just several days after arriving on The Ranch. We had no idea she was pregnant. She had lost the baby. Most likely days before she went into labor. That put a strain on my soul. Pappy was a rescue I took in last year. He was about 13+ years old when I rescued him (Goat life expectancy is 15 years). He spent the last year here on The Ranch being spoiled, cared for and loved. He had some trouble with mobility when he arrived. He was given a vitamin regimen for the first couple of weeks as well as deworming. He was doing well after that. His condition gradually declined and he had to be helped up to eat and drink. He was able to stand and manage still for quite some time. Over the last couple of months when he was being helped up he had trouble staying standing. I reached out to several sanctuaries who help Goats with special needs and I was not getting timely responses or the feeling that they even wanted to help. So I had to make the tough call to put him down 🥺 I drove out to a 24 hour Veterinary Hospital in Henderson Nevada around 10:00 pm. They handled the procedure then we drove him back home. About 2:00 am I started to dig his grave under one of his favorite trees he loved to forage from. I dug and dug and felt so numb. It kept popping into my mind that I had just done this for Little Momma 2 weeks prior. I performed a small Native American Ceremony for him. I made offerings of Sage. I laid him in his grave and gave more offerings. I scooped water into my hand and poured it into his mouth as his last drink for his journey. I grabbed dirt one hand full at a time and placed it on and around him until he was covered. Then I began to shovel more to fill the grave. I asked Creator to care for him and show him the way until I see him again. Just before sunrise he was laid to rest. I then came to the realization that I had dug 2 graves in as many weeks and my soul shattered into pieces. I will see you again my Pappy Boy I hope that you are looking out for Little Momma until we are all together again. A’ho 🪶

The day after Momma lost her baby she was showing me more trust. Having not left her side the day before. We started to build a strong bond. As she laid on her side trying to push to deliver her baby I kneeled beside her resting her head on my lap while rubbing her neck and talking to her to keep her calm. I would bring handfuls of water up to her lips to keep her mouth from getting dry. In the days prior when I would enter her corral she would walk to the opposite end. Her taking food from my hand is great progress. Atta girl Momma, atta girl.

A legend. A true survivor.

This incredible wild burro is the only one known to have naturally healed in the wild after surviving the brutal attacks in the Triangle of Death. One of a kind, this remarkable burro is a living testament to resilience, strength, and the healing power of freedom.

Today, he or she continues to roam freely with a herd on one of the DL properties.

We ask everyone to please respect this burro's freedom and refrain from calling to report that rescue is needed. While the burro is on the thin side, the herd has access to food and water, and we will continue to monitor them from a distance.

The very thing that helped this burro survive and heal was remaining with his or her family. The best thing we can do now is allow this survivor to continue living freely among the herd that has played such an important role in that recovery.

A true legend. A true survivor. A symbol of the strength and spirit of America's wild burros ♥️
