A few things I have learned after years of grooming dogs through Michigan summers.
A clean, well-maintained coat genuinely helps dogs regulate temperature better. Matted or overly dirty coats trap heat and can make a hot day a lot more miserable for your dog.
Beyond grooming, a few things that actually make a difference: access to shade at all times, fresh cool water (add ice if it is really hot), avoid pavement walks during peak heat hours, and never leave your dog in a parked car even for a few minutes.
Your dog cannot tell you when they are too hot. Watch for heavy panting, drooling, and slowing down on walks. Those are the signals to get them somewhere cool.
