We are in foxtail season! These little nuggets are nasty! They can burrow down deep into ear canals, between toes, and even up the nose and to the brain! Keep an eye out to keep your dog safe!

Ticks have been spotted in Orem! Normally we don't have to worry about ticks within city limits in this area, but both the University and a pest control company confirmed that ticks, not mites, were found all over the back porch of someone living near the Orem City Center park. If they're in Orem they are most certainly in other cities in the area too.

It's crazy to me how many people (professionals included) believe that dogs don't have emotions and essentially run on instinct and simple what is good/bad for them. Not only do we have brain scans proving the contrary, but we have scientific studies showing that decision making is nearly impossible without emotions (and what decisions are able to be made are almost always bad). Dogs are sentient, emotional based creatures and deserve to be treated as such.

I had a conversation with a client about this recently so I thought I'd share. While displacement behaviors (fiddling around) are mild or early signs of stress, they don't automatically mean your dog is anxious or that there is a problem. Don't let some keyboard warrior make you feel bad because they saw your dog yawn or itch or something so they "know" you are doing something wrong. These behaviors can also happen if your dog has just encountered something new or unusual, was momentarily startled or surprised, if they're feeling frustrated or confused, if they are needing a second to process something hard, or even just wanting a quick little micro break. Always look at the big picture. How is the rest of your dog's body language/behavior? Does your dog still seem interested in what you are doing? Is your dog throwing more than one of these signs or doing one repeatedly? Are the behaviors escalating or deescalating? When you see any of these behaviors assess, don't stress!

I hate when people try to tell me that mixed breed dogs are healthier because of "hybrid vigor." A mule is a hybrid. A dog mixed with a wolf or a coyote is a hybrid. A mixed breed dog is a mix within the exact same species. It's not a hybrid. It's still a dog. And oftentimes you just end up with a big gamble of health issues from all the breeds mixed in. A great example are the issues we're seeing with doodles having chicken allergies and seizure disorders. Any breed can be allergic to chicken. Poodles can be prone to epilepsy. But we see significantly higher rates of these issues in doodles over their purebred counterparts. If you are going to get a mixed breed dog, just be fully aware that what exactly you end up with is going to be a gamble 🤷🏼‍♀️

As funny as this is, it's also incredibly accurate. Dogs are social animals and are able to easily recognize our emotions. If you are frustrated, they will get frustrated. If you are patient, they'll develop patience. Your energy and attitude during interactions with your dog can make all the difference
