AKC FULL vs. LIMITED REGISTRATION — What’s the Difference?
This is something puppy buyers often have questions about, so here’s a simple breakdown!
AKC FULL REGISTRATION
Full Registration means the dog has breeding rights through AKC.
With Full Registration:
• The dog can participate in AKC events.
• The dog may be bred, and eligible offspring can be registered with AKC.
• Full Registration does not automatically mean a dog is breeding quality—health testing, structure, temperament, genetics, working ability, and breeder requirements should still be considered before breeding.
AKC LIMITED REGISTRATION
Limited Registration means the dog is still an AKC-registered purebred dog, but it is sold without AKC breeding rights.
With Limited Registration:
• The dog is still registered with AKC and receives AKC registration paperwork.
• The dog can participate in many AKC events, including obedience, rally, agility, tracking, scent work, and other performance sports.
• If the dog is bred, its offspring cannot be registered with AKC.
• Dogs on Limited Registration are not eligible to compete in AKC conformation breed competition.
Limited Registration does not mean the dog is lesser quality, unhealthy, or "not really AKC registered." Many wonderful working, sport, and companion dogs are placed on Limited Registration simply because they were not sold as breeding prospects.
Can Limited Registration be changed to Full?
Yes—but this is an important part! The litter owner(s)/breeder(s) who placed the dog on Limited Registration must authorize the change with AKC. A puppy buyer cannot simply decide later that they want breeding rights and change the registration themselves.
This allows breeders to protect their bloodlines and make thoughtful decisions about which dogs should contribute to future generations.
At the end of the day, Full = AKC breeding rights. Limited = AKC registered without breeding rights. Both dogs are still AKC registered!
