✨ What is Laser Therapy & How Can It Help Your Dog? 🐾

Laser therapy, also called photobiomodulation (PBM), uses specific wavelengths of light to interact with tissues and support the body’s natural healing processes.

Laser therapy may be incorporated into a rehabilitation plan to help:

🐕 Support pain management
🔥 Reduce inflammation
🩹 Support tissue healing
🦴 Assist with management of osteoarthritis and joint discomfort
💪 Support recovery from muscle, tendon, and other soft-tissue injuries
🏥 Support recovery following certain surgeries or injuries

What does a session feel like?
Laser therapy is non-invasive, and many dogs tolerate treatments very well. There are no needles or incisions—just light delivered to the targeted treatment area.

At Pawtential, laser therapy is one tool that can be incorporated alongside therapeutic exercise, mobility work, home modifications, and other rehabilitation strategies based on each dog’s individual needs.

Because every dog and condition is different, laser therapy isn’t a one-size-fits-all treatment. 🐾

🐾 Is This Normal? 🤔
“Why does my dog sit with one back leg kicked out?”

You may have seen your dog sit with one hind leg stretched out to the side (sometimes called a “lazy sit”). While some dogs naturally sit this way, a consistent or new change in sitting posture may be a sign that something else is going on.

A dog who frequently sits with one leg kicked out may be showing:
🚩 Pain or discomfort
🚩 Decreased muscle flexibility
🚩 Decreased joint range of motion
🚩 A compensation pattern to avoid putting stress on an area

There are many reasons this can happen, including:
🐕 Arthritis or age-related changes
🐕 Hip or joint discomfort
🐕 Previous injuries
🐕 Ligament injuries (such as an ACL tear)
🐕 Muscle weakness or imbalance

If this is new, happens more often, or is paired with changes in movement, it may be worth taking a closer look.

Your dog’s posture is one piece of the puzzle. At Pawtential, we look at the whole movement picture — strength, mobility, coordination, and confidence — to help dogs move their best. 🐾

🐾 Dogs are experts at hiding pain.

Unlike people, dogs rarely tell us something hurts in obvious ways. Instead, they often compensate.

When one joint or muscle becomes painful, they naturally shift their weight or change the way they move to avoid discomfort. While this helps them continue their daily activities, it can place extra stress on other parts of the body.

A dog may still:
• Walk normally
• Run and play
• Jump on the couch
• Wag their tail

…and still be experiencing pain.

Over time, these compensation patterns can contribute to muscle soreness, joint strain, and reduced mobility.

That’s why rehabilitation isn’t just about treating an injury—it’s also about recognizing subtle movement changes, restoring balanced movement, and helping prevent secondary issues before they develop.

Have you noticed your dog moving differently lately? Small changes can tell us a lot. 🐶💙

🐾 Ask a Rehab Therapist Anything!

Have a question about your pet’s movement, mobility, pain, arthritis, recovery, or rehabilitation?

Now’s your chance!

Drop your questions in the comments or send a message, and I’ll answer them in upcoming posts and stories.

Need ideas? You could ask:
🐕 Is my dog’s slowing down normal aging?
🐕 Can rehabilitation help arthritis?
🐕 Why does my dog sit crooked?
🐕 When should my pet start rehab after surgery?
🐕 How can I keep my senior pet active?

I love helping pet owners better understand their pets, so ask away! ❤️
