❤️ Reactivity Rehab ❤️

As a reminder, I'm Koda's 3rd trainer.

His previous trainer recommended behavioral euthanasia due to his severe and continually escalating aggression.

During our super boring reactivity rehab work, Koda has been showing increasing signs of curiosity.

Because there's so much value in what dogs can learn from each other, I wanted to see what his response would be to a really solid dog providing him with good feedback and communication.

So he got to "meet" my friend's amazing dog, Bert.

It started off a little rocky.

But after only a few minutes, curiosity surfaced.

Koda was still over stimulated and struggling to regulate himself, but he was not showing aggression.

And then just watch how the rest of it plays out!

When you change the emotion you change the behavior.

Koda's previous trainers had used severe corrections in attempts to MAKE him stop.

Those corrections were ultimately ineffective.

And not only were they ineffective, they caused an escalation of the behavior over time.

So their solution was his death.

It's amazing what a little empathy, understanding, and education will do.

❤️ Cooperative Care ❤️

This is a more recent video of Henry's progress with his cooperative care training utilizing a chin rest.

As a reminder, I was called to work with Henry because of his willingness to use teeth when someone touched him.

Due to chronic ear and eye care needs, it was especially important that we get Henry on board with being handled.

As you can see he's comfortably allowing me to touch his entire body.

In fact, look at his little tail wiggle through the process!!

It's harder to see that I'm lifting each of his eyelids as rehearsal for applying drops.

I've also started touching and lifting his ears which is going to be the most challenging part for him.

But he's crushing it.

Giving him the choice to cooperate and the ability to opt out has made all the difference in the world.

❤️ Adolescent Academics ❤️

The "teenage" phase can be challenging.

Their brains aren't fully developed yet.

This is when young dogs usually struggle the most with with over stimulation, impulse control, self regulation, and frustration.

Your youngster is trying to figure out life and gain some autonomy and independence.

At the same time, you are trying desperately to keep them under control and get them to listen.

This can be difficult for you, but it's also difficult for them.

Living within the rules and boundaries of human expectations is not normal for a dog.

In this phase especially, we can unintentionally create conflict and disconnection in our relationship.

With understanding, consistency, and clarity, this doesn't have to be the case.
