In the bitter cold of a Western New York winter, when the snowbanks along the streets of Olean turned gray with salt and the wind cut through alleyways like a knife, most people hurried indoors without noticing the silent lives hiding beneath porches and abandoned buildings.

But one woman noticed.

Purrfect Kitty Mission began not with a grand building or a wealthy donor, but with heartbreak. Founder Lynneesa Mitchell saw the growing population of stray and feral cats wandering through Olean’s neighborhoods — hungry, freezing, injured, and forgotten. While many people saw “just cats,” she saw living creatures trying desperately to survive another night.

During one especially brutal stretch of winter weather, she started placing makeshift shelters around the city. Small acts of mercy became a mission. One rescued kitten became five. Five became dozens. Soon, frightened cats once hiding in fear were curled safely in blankets, purring in foster homes for the first time in their lives.

What made the story remarkable was how quickly the community responded.

Neighbors donated food. Families shared social media posts. Children arrived with bags of toys and blankets. Local supporters contributed thousands of dollars to help provide veterinary care, spay-and-neuter services, and emergency rescues. In only a short time, the organization helped place more than 50 cats and kittens into homes.

Some of the cats came from heartbreaking situations.

There was Pinky, found alone in a cornfield crying for help before being rescued and transformed into a playful, affectionate kitten. There was Bria, once feral and fearful, who slowly learned to trust humans and blossom into a loving companion. Buddy brought endless energy and joy after being rescued from uncertainty. Lincoln, the orange kitten with a giant personality, became the kind of cat who greeted strangers like old friends.

Each cat carried a different story, but all shared the same ending: someone cared enough to stop and help.

As Purrfect Kitty Mission grew, it became more than a rescue. It became a symbol of what a small city can accomplish when compassion outweighs indifference. The organization’s work addressing feral cat colonies and trap-neuter-release efforts eventually gained enough recognition that the City of Olean partnered with the nonprofit for cat control and emergency feline care services.

That partnership represented something larger than policy.

It meant a once-overlooked problem was finally being treated with humanity.

In many towns, stray cats remain invisible until they become a nuisance. In Olean, they found advocates instead. Volunteers crawled beneath sheds to rescue kittens. Foster families opened their homes. Veterinarians donated time. Community members who had never met one another united around a simple belief: suffering should not be ignored just because it is small and quiet.

And perhaps that is why the story resonates so deeply.

Because Purrfect Kitty Mission reminds people that meaningful change rarely begins with power or money. It begins with somebody willing to kneel in the snow for a freezing animal no one else noticed.

One rescued cat at a time, Olean became a little kinder.

Huge thank you to Rainie Zeliff and her family for taking her free time to refurbish the vet cages that were donated to us! These are the accomplishments no one sees, and our rescue is beyond grateful for all of the hard work people do behind the scenes. From the heart of our rescue, it truly means so much to us — and to the kitties who will be using them. 🐾💛

Update on Baby Kitty (yes this is her name) yesterday a good citizen posted about a cat that needed urgent help in the Olean Missing Pet group, she is currently still here Lakewood Veterinary - Rushford, we checked for pregnancy and do not see signs of kittens, right now she is under sedation getting part of her tail off because it was completely rotted, we believe her tail was run over, and she also has a mouth injury causing drooling, she’s being treated for the severe tail infection and pain management right now, we also have a stool sample to make sure there are no weird parasites!

Graphic Warning ⚠️

Little Red’s surgery was a success thanks to the incredible support of our wonderful PKM community! ❤️ We are beyond grateful for those who helped us through this journey.

A huge thank you to Lakewood Veterinary - Rushford they never fail to show compassion and care, even during the moments when we feel like we’ve failed ourselves.

We’ll continue posting updates on Red’s healing journey, but for now, we’re just thankful she can finally start feeling better now that the root of the issue is gone. 🐾

Hey everyone! Our new shelter is almost complete and we can't wait for our event next weekend. We hope to see many of your faces. 😀 Our new shelter is running VERY low on litter. We have kittens and adult kitties too. We could use kitten AND adult litter. This is a very tangible way to help! Thank you in advance!

New intakes as of yesterday came in with an upper respiratory infection. Just look at the difference after only ONE day of treatment! ❤️

This is what it’s all about. These transformations are the heart of what we do, and seeing them start to feel better so quickly makes every late night worth it.

These sweet babies are still under treatment and are not yet available for adoption, but we can’t wait to keep sharing their progress with you all! 🐾

Late night post… and honestly, one we wish we didn’t have to make.

The last 24 hours have been incredibly overwhelming for our team. What started as an emergency trip to Orchard Park last night turned into even more difficult news today when we learned that FIVE kittens currently in our care tested positive for Feline Calicivirus.

These are the moments in rescue that no one really sees — the sleepless nights, the emergency vet trips, the constant worrying, the scrambling to make sure every single cat gets the care they deserve no matter what comes our way.

Because of these unexpected medical expenses, we are now about $300 short for Friday’s spay and neuter clinic.

We hate asking for help as much as we do lately. Truly. We try our hardest to carry everything ourselves and make things work behind the scenes, but sometimes rescue throws more at us than we can prepare for.

This month alone, we have poured everything we have into this mission — moving into our new building, rushing to appointments, taking in cats who had nowhere else to go, preparing for Little Red’s surgery, organizing upcoming fundraisers, and doing everything possible to build something that will truly make a difference for the cats in our community.

And despite how exhausted we are, we would do it all over again for them.

Every spay and neuter clinic matters. Every kitten matters. Every life matters.

Right now, we are just asking our community to help us push through this final hurdle for Friday’s clinic. If only 6 people donated $50, we would reach our goal.

If you can donate, share this post, or simply help us spread the word, it would mean more than we can explain. Your support is what keeps us going during moments like these and allows us to continue saying “yes” to the cats who need us most.

To our Purrfect Kitty Mission family,

We are reaching out today for urgent help for Little Red. We’ve attached the estimate for the emergency surgery she needs to have her eye removed as soon as possible. Despite medication and strong eye drops to keep her comfortable, her condition continues to worsen, and surgery can no longer wait.

As many of you know, we have never stopped working tirelessly to secure funding and provide a safe haven for animals in need. Rescue work is incredibly rewarding, but it also comes with overwhelming medical expenses. Right now, we urgently need to raise at least **$425** for Little Red’s procedure.

If you are able to help in any way, no matter how small, we would be deeply grateful. Every donation brings Little Red one step closer to relief and recovery. ❤️🙏
