Mastering new Skills! 🎓🐾 Watch Bragi show off some seriously impressive "hold" and "drop it" skills with his blue bowl. The focus in those eyes is real (especially when he knows there's a well-deserved treat on the line 😉).

Want to build better communication and impulse control with your dog? The "Hold" and "Drop It" sequence is a fantastic exercise to add to your training routine!

Here is a quick breakdown of the mechanics shown in this session:

The "Hold" Command:
It’s more than just a fun trick with a blue bowl! Teaching a solid "hold" builds immense focus and impulse control. It serves as a foundational skill for advanced obedience, retrieval, and utility work. Notice the sustained eye contact and stillness required to keep the item steady.

The "Drop It" Command:
This is arguably one of the most critical safety commands you can teach. Whether your dog picks up something dangerous on a walk or you simply want to end a game of fetch peacefully, a reliable "drop it" eliminates resource guarding and conflict. The goal is to teach the dog that willingly giving up the item is always the most rewarding choice.

Dogs overheat much faster than we do, making long summer sessions counterproductive and potentially dangerous. Instead of running full courses in the sun, use the hot months to dial in your mechanical skills and consistency in the shade.
Break out the agility ladder for focused, two-minute bursts to keep footwork and obedience sharp without exhausting your dog. Keep the sessions brief, maintain clear body language and always have plenty of water on hand for the cool-down!

Want to teach your pup to weave like an agility superstar? Take a cue from Bragi and use the tried-and-true luring technique! Grab a super high-value treat (the smellier, the better!) and hold it right at your dog's nose to lock in their focus. Guide them through the obstacle in a smooth, continuous "S" pattern, making sure they enter with that first pole on their left shoulder. Stick close by their side, walking them through that fun zig-zag rhythm. Once they conquer the final pole, throw a mini-party with lots of praise and their tasty reward! With practice, you'll eventually fade the hand lure as their confidence and muscle memory skyrocket. Training Tip: Keep Training on Track During Summer Travel!

Summer vacations can disrupt your dog's normal routine, but you can easily keep their skills sharp while on the road! At Brio Noir Dog Training, we always recommend practicing core companion obedience behaviors during rest stop breaks or right in your hotel room or rental. You don't need your usual indoor training space to reinforce good habits; in fact, running through basic commands in new, slightly distracting environments is a fantastic way to strengthen your dog's focus. A few minutes of daily practice ensures they remain well-behaved travel companions and are perfectly prepped to jump right back into sessions the moment you return from your trip.

When it comes to raising a well-mannered family companion, the gap between understanding a training concept and physically executing it is usually where frustration sets in.

Knowledge is watching a tutorial on how to teach loose-leash walking or reading a book about positive reinforcement. It’s knowing the mechanical steps of how to lure your dog into a "sit" or a "down."

Application is your actual timing when delivering a treat. It’s keeping your own frustration in check when your pup decides to bark at the mail carrier. It is the physical consistency of doing a 180 for a few steps before continuing every single time the leash gets tight, even when you are running late and just want to finish the morning walk.

Whether I am out practicing with Zenzi, Tanwyn and Bragi, or helping a family through Brio Noir Dog Training, the biggest hurdle is almost always human mechanics, not canine intelligence.

Next time you are working with your dog in the kitchen or the backyard, stop worrying about teaching them a brand new trick. Spend 80% of your session practicing your own application: your timing, your tone of voice, and your body language. Stop trying to "know" more dog psychology, and start focusing on how to "do" the mechanics better!

Knowledge vs. Application
There is a massive difference between knowing how to
do something and actually doing it. It’s the gap
between Knowledge and Application. Knowledge is the
acquisition of information—the roadmap, the theory,
the recipe. Application is the physical and mental
ex*****on of that knowledge in real-time. It’s the
difference between reading a blueprint and actually
swinging the hammer.

You can memorize the exact material list for a fly
pattern, but until your hands feel the proper tension of
the thread, it's just an idea. You can read every book
on canine agility, but until you're out on the course
reading your dog's subtle shifts in body language, it's
just theory. And you can stare at a piece of sheet
music until you know every pitch and rhythm, but
playing it so it speaks to an audience takes physical
ex*****on and emotional intent.

As musicians, handlers, and anglers, we often spend
too much time chasing new information and not
enough time refining our physical application. Knowing
a concept doesn't mean you own it yet. This month,
we are focusing on crossing that bridge. Stop trying to
"know" more, and let's start focusing on how to "do"
better.
