Lost & Found ManTrailing

Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to attend CPR and Stop the Bleed training. We also learned basic K9 First Aid.

Learning never ends. It is such a blessing to be around people willing to share their knowledge. Thank you Mantrailing North Texas for sharing your wealth of knowledge with us.

I'd love to trail in Germany, with Lisa of course. I'd also love to trail in a national park or around the Sequoia trees. What about you?

What’s your dream Mantrailing location- or your dream “best trail” scenario?

Let's talk rewards. What have you found that your dog wants to work for? Do you change it up?

Ronin is VERY food motivated. I am pretty sure you can teach him to just about anything if you'll feed him. Want his attention? Have food. I try to keep treats he loves the most as his high value reward for ManTrailing and training. Since he loves food so much, I am able to rotate his rewards. A boy has to have options, right?

Oklahoma weather is forever changing, often in the same day. How do our dogs respond to weather conditions and the changes? This is a good read.

When you're setting up a trail, there are lots of things to consider. Trail age, length, surface, environment...But are you also considering the weather? 🌀🌧️☀️❄️

It's easy to think of the weather as something that's simply part of the day's training conditions, but it can have a much bigger influence on the scent picture your dog is working with than you might realise.

Check out our new blog exploring how different weather conditions can influence scent and why weather should always be something we consider when setting up our trails.👇

What will our dogs work for? Is it a higher value treat? A toy? Getting to know your dog and how they are rewarded to help keep their motivation in wanting to ManTrail.

Take my boy Ronin for example. He is highly trainable...if the reward is right. He is extremely food motivated. The right treat keeps him motivated at willing to work. Getting loved on by his trail layer is an added bonus.

If we want to create a motivated Mantrailing dog, we need to think beyond simply teaching them the game...

Motivation comes from making the game VALUABLE to them.

And when we get the training right, we can create a dog that doesn't just follow the scent, but actively wants to prioritise it.

In a nutshell, here's a simple formula to achieve this 👇

Create drive through success
+
Create focus through your reward system
=
A motivated dog that prioritises the game of Mantrailing.

So...it has been a while. I am hoping I am in the "calm down" phase of life. Fingers crossed I'll be able to schedule a few trails here in the next couple of weeks. Those weather guys talk like we will have a cool down coming around mid-month. That would be a great time to let our dogs work! Hope you all have been staying cool out there ☺️

This is such an incredible accomplishment. Congratulations!!

ManTrailing is such an awesome dog sport. We do our best to inclusive, meeting the dog (and handler) where they’re at.

Our very first blind and deaf dog has passed their Level 1 MTG assessment last week... and in just 10 minutes! 🤯🐾

What an amazing reminder of just how incredible a dog's nose is. - When a dog can't rely on their sight or hearing, their nose becomes the way they explore, understand and navigate the world around them.

A good reminder that if we stop focusing on what a dog can't do and start building on what they can do, they can achieve some pretty amazing things!

What a team...huge congratulations! 🥳

I can easily be someone who is proud to see Ronin follow the trail layer almost exactly. Instead of staying frustrated when our trails don’t seem to go to plan, I have to remember that Ronin smells and sees things I can’t. He’s also half German Shepherd, half Malinois. With that, he trails just as either breed would be expected. My goal as a handler and an instructor is to learn something from every session, good and bad.

Getting into ManTrailing has been the best decision I’ve made for my boy Ronin. He has grown so much more confident and is able to simply exist in the world around him.
