EHV/EHM Outbreak

McClelland Farrier Services will continue regular scheduled appointments.

Reminders
1. I dont work on sick horses. It's your responsibility before our appointment to let me know if a horse on the property is sick. This has always and will continue as standard procedure.

2. I change shirts between clients properties and barns and will be adding a disinfectant spray to my boots and chaps as well between.

3. Between stops tools will be disinfected and have a deep clean at the end of every day.

4. Clients will be questioned and need to have answers ready for anywhere and times that any horses have been on or off the property in the past 30 days.

5. Boarding barns are currently on HOLD until I speak directly with barn owners on the whereabouts of every horse on the property! Just because your horse hasn't went anywhere, doesn't mean someone else's horse didn't!

The Equine Disease Communication Center is monitoring an outbreak of EHM that originated at the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) World Finals and Elite Barrel Race event Nov 5-9. To date, officially confirmed cases have been reported in the following states-

Cases like this make me happy and mad all at the same time. Happy that I got to make a horse feel tremendously better and hopefully be pain freew walking around. Super frustrating and mad that people let this happen to horses. They cant take care of themselves! This is also why you need to keep a good farrier on a consistent schedule!!

All sorts of different set ups this week! 3D Pads for Navicular, some sliders for roping and some rim shoes for a barrel horse!

How many people would say, dont touch the heels on this horse? While you may think that, drawing the heel back to the correct position while collecting the toe is the proper way to go about it! Not trimming the heels allows for the hoof to grow forward and put stress on the toe, causing excessive growth with flat soles infront of the apex of the frog. This causes a lower angle and more stress on the tendons in the leg!

Spring time is here!! Just a few helpful tips!

Friendly reminder as we get into storm season and fly season.

Keep your horses feet as clean as possible, mud and dirt packed into a foot leads ro severe thrush and unwanted growth, causing shoes to be lost and sore unhealthy hoofs!

Fly spray your horses and keep their area as clean from manure and mud as possible. This will eliminate the extreme feet stomping which looses shoes and cracks/chips feet!

Fly boots really do help!

Watch your horses and their nutrition with the fresh green grass coming up to prevent horses/ponies from foundering or having white line disease/laminitis!!
