What actually happens to kibble during extrusion?

Those little brown pieces in a bag don’t start out looking anything like kibble.

Most kibble begins as a mixture of ground ingredients. During a process called extrusion, those ingredients are mixed with moisture and subjected to heat, pressure and mechanical shear inside an extruder.

As the mixture is forced through a die and exits the machine, the sudden drop in pressure causes moisture to rapidly turn to steam. The pieces expand or “puff" into the familiar kibble shape.

The kibble is then dried to reduce its moisture content, and depending on the formula, fats, flavors or other coatings may be applied afterward.

🔥 So why does this matter to us?

Extrusion isn't simply mixing ingredients and baking them. It's a multi-step manufacturing process that significantly changes the ingredients from the form in which they started. Heat can also reduce some heat-sensitive nutrients, something manufacturers take into account when formulating the finished food.

And that's where kibble and raw take two very different paths.

🥩 Why do we choose premium raw for our dogs?

We want our dogs eating food made from recognizable whole-food ingredients —real meat, organs and bone.

We prefer food that provides nutrition from those whole-food ingredients rather than relying heavily on added synthetic vitamin premixes.

We like that raw food contains naturally occurring moisture and doesn't have to be dried into a shelf-stable product.

We also choose food that hasn't gone through high-heat extrusion to become kibble.

Vitamins on a dog-food label can come from very different sources.

Some foods rely heavily on added synthetic vitamins and minerals to meet nutritional requirements.

Others obtain more of those nutrients naturally from whole-food ingredients such as meat, organs, bone, eggs and other nutrient-dense foods.

🥩 Whole-food nutrients come packaged naturally with proteins, fats and other compounds found in the original ingredient.

💊 Synthetic vitamins are manufactured forms of individual nutrients that are added to a recipe—often appearing toward the end of an ingredient list under names you may not immediately recognize.

But here's the important part:

“Synthetic” doesn't automatically mean bad, and “whole food” doesn't automatically mean nutritionally complete.

What matters is whether the finished diet provides the nutrients your dog needs in the correct amounts and proportions.

🤔 **BET YOU DIDN’T KNOW…**

When you see **“MEAT MEAL”** on your dog food’s ingredient list, that does NOT mean fresh meat that was simply ground up.

**“Meal” means the animal tissue has been RENDERED.**

Rendering involves processing the animal tissue with heat, removing much of the water and fat, and then grinding what remains into a concentrated meal.

But here’s the part many dog owners don’t know:

🐾 If the label simply says **“meat meal,”** the animal species may NOT be identified.

Compare that with an ingredient that specifically says **“beef meal”** or another named species—the source has been identified.

And “meat meal” is very different from the **fresh muscle meat** most people picture when they see the word *meat*.

According to AAFCO, meat meal is a rendered product made from mammalian tissues. Certain materials—including added hair, hooves, horns, hide trimmings, manure, and stomach/rumen contents—are specifically excluded, except for amounts that may occur unavoidably during proper processing.

💡 **THE TAKEAWAY?**

Don’t just look for the word **MEAT** on the front of a bag.

**Turn the bag around and READ THE INGREDIENTS.**

There is a BIG difference between:
