We are excited to share a new addition to our team of non-releasable ambassador animals!

Some of you may recall the baby opossum who came to us in May 2026, after surviving a dog attack that caused her to lose her right eye. She was only a few weeks old, weighing less than 100 grams, and required surgery to remove what remained of her eye. She quickly won the hearts of our team with her unique appearance and adventurous attitude, and our volunteers started calling her “Winky”.

As she grew, it became clear that she lacked the skills necessary to survive in the wild on her own. We are honored to offer her a permanent place to live, here at ROW, and a future helping us educate the public about opossums, conservation, and our mission.

“Winky” was never intended to be her forever name, and we knew that once we could share this news with the public, we would leave her final name up to the community. Now, we need your help naming her!

Are you thinking Wink? Feeling something more festive, or want to name her after your own beloved pet?

For $5 per entry, you can enter a name of your choosing into a raffle, with the winner announced via Facebook on November 20th. The winning name will be randomly selected, but the more entries you purchase, the better chance of your name being drawn! If your name is chosen, you will also receive an exclusive piece of merchandise featuring her new name! Funds raised during this time will go directly back to the construction of her forever enclosure.

Today is World Migratory Bird Day! 🪶

During seasonal migration, many birds cross our human-marked borders and take up residence in different countries. Because they make their home in different places throughout the year, each country shares the responsibility to protect them. So, the US, Mexico, Canada, and other countries joined together to sign the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

The MBTA protects over 1,000 native bird species in North America alone! It prohibits people from hunting, capturing, possessing, or selling protected species without a federal permit. These protections extend from the birds themselves to their nests, feathers, and even eggshells! 🐣

These Kite species are just two of the many migratory birds we’ve rehabilitated here! One is a Swallowtail Kite and the other is a Mississippi Kite… Do you know who is who 🤔

Today has been the most Monday feeling Wednesday there ever was. Just since 9am we have received

9 baby flying squirrels
9 baby grey squirrels
4 baby rabbits
4 baby opossums
5 (various species) songbirds
1 gopher tortoise

This puts us well over 100 animals in care, with very few hands on deck.

*IMPORTANT*
If you find an animal soaking wet in the rain please take it inside, thoroughly dry it, and put them in a cardboard box with air holes in a quiet dark place. Give baby animals a secondary heat source. Cold kills infants. Make a rice sock to let them cuddle against or put a heating pad on low under the box. Never give food or water as it can cause aspiration pneumonia and death. As long as a baby is kept warm, it will not starve, and incorrect diet and feeding technique will do more harm than good. Do this immediately before you even go searching your phone for numbers for a rehab.

We simply cannot keep up with the massive need for wildlife rehab in this area. We get hundreds of messages a day and do our best to take his many animals as possible, but there will always be more of them than there are us…especially when developers are taking their homes and it’s getting harder to get a rehab permit. Please consider making a donation to support our mission of rehabilitation and release. We spend thousands of dollars a month on specialty formula, hospital supplies, medications, and general operating expenses. We don’t have any paid staff so everything you donate goes back to supporting the animals that need us.

We closed early on Saturday to give our team a well deserved break, and have our volunteer appreciation day! We played a team-building relay race, marble pickup competition while wearing bite gloves, ROW trivia, and a scavenger hunt to get to know one another!

We would like to thank everyone who supplied some extra goodies for our hard working crew to show them how much we value all that they do here. Baby season definitely isn’t over yet, but we are feeling a little more recharged and ready to tackle the last couple months of the year!

5 baby squirrels. 5 different stages of development. And a LOT of work!

This time of year, ROW and other wildlife rehabs are up to our ears in baby squirrels. In just one day, we had 47 messages for a total of 52 baby squirrels. In one day!!!

If we took in every squirrel we were texted about during an average week, we would easily bring in 300-400 squirrels. And each one is with us for weeks or months, until they are old enough to be released.

This is why it’s important to attempt to re-nest babies that appear healthy (text us and we’ll help you with the process) and have patience with our team if you’re referred to another rehabber because we’re at capacity. Each baby we can take in deserves the best quality of care, and that means one-on-one bottle feedings multiple times a day, daily cleaning, and medical assessments.

If we could provide adequate care to every squirrel, we would take them all. And if we refer you to another rehabber or resource, it’s never because we don’t care or don’t want to do the work. We promise that our team is working hard to save as many wild lives as we can!

We have a different kind of donation request:

Next Saturday we are having a volunteer appreciation party to give our crew a day of fun, team building, and relaxation after a VERY busy year. We would love to be able to provide a few goodies for everyone as a thank you for their unwavering dedication to the wildlife that needs our help.

In particular, we’d like to ask for gas cards. Many of our volunteers drive over an hour each way to come in and clean up after our animals💩 on their days off, in the heat, and with no pay! We would be so appreciative of donations to offset the expenses for them.

Other gift cards to local restaurants or businesses, or small items like chapsticks, sunscreen, bug spray, reusable water bottles, or seasonal goodies would also be welcome! Please text us at 352-234-6098 if you’d like to drop off some items (either those listed or any anything else!) before Saturday.

Thank you!
