Marvin Pierce Dog Teacher with some knowledge
Resource guarding doesn’t always start with a growl, lunge or a bite. There are subtle behaviors you might not notice that can be a sign of a dog resource guarding.
Resource guarding isn’t just about bones and food, some dogs will claim possession of people, places, items like beds or areas they are fed in and of course food items or toys. The item doesn’t have to be of obvious high value, to some dogs that have serious resource guarding tendencies they might guard a piece of paper.
If you only see subtle signs of resource guarding please believe that it can easily escalate to a bite or a dog fight. This is a serious behavior that can be normal for even puppies to try but needs training intervention early for the best outcomes.
There are breeds that this is more or less common to see but any dog can show this behavior.
