I realize it’s been a long time since I’ve talked about our sweet Phoenix 🐦🔥 and the reason Phoenix and Friends exists.
For those who are newer to our page, this is where our story began.
In April of 2023, Phoenix was found badly burned. Because of the pattern of his burns, it was believed that someone had thrown him into a fire pit.
Even writing those words still hurts.
I will never forget picking him up in Ruffsdale the day he was found. I looked at this horribly injured little cat who had every reason in the world to be terrified of people, and I knew in that moment that I was going to do whatever it took to help him.
Phoenix spent several weeks at Frankie’s Friends under the care of Dr. Morrow and her amazing team, receiving the medical care he so desperately needed and, more importantly, deserved.
When I dropped him off at the hospital, I didn’t know exactly what his future would look like.
But I knew one thing with absolute certainty.
If Phoenix survived, he was coming home with me.
I would adopt him.
I would make sure that for the rest of his life, he would never have to wonder if he was safe.
He would never have to wonder where his next meal was coming from.
He would never have to be cold, alone, or afraid.
And he would never again know what it felt like to be unwanted.
At the time, I thought my mission was simply to save Phoenix.
I had no idea that Phoenix was about to give me a mission of my own.
🐦🔥❤️
What happened to him changed something in me.
I couldn’t undo the cruelty he had experienced. I couldn’t erase his pain or change the fact that someone had failed him so terribly.
But I could decide what happened next.
I could make sure that the rest of his story was filled with safety, full bellies, soft beds, ridiculous amounts of love, and the knowledge that he would never be alone again.
And somewhere along the way, I realized I wanted to do that for more than just Phoenix.
I wanted to be the person who changed what happened next for the others, too.
The ones born outside who never asked for that life.
The ones dumped when they became inconvenient.
The ones who are hungry, sick, injured, scared, or forgotten.
The friendly strays desperately trying to convince someone to take them home.
The feral cats who may never want to live inside but still deserve food, shelter, medical care, and the chance to live without producing generation after generation of kittens struggling to survive.
And so, because of one little burned cat who came into my life in April of 2023, Phoenix and Friends was born.
Phoenix is more than our namesake.
He is our why.
He is there in every trap we set.
Every spay and neuter appointment.
Every emergency vet visit.
Every bottle-fed baby.
Every scared cat we sit patiently beside.
Every adoption.
Every goodbye that breaks our hearts.
And every single life we are fortunate enough to change.
Sometimes rescue is exhausting. Sometimes the need feels endless. There are days filled with heartbreak, frustration, and the feeling that no matter how much we do, there will always be another animal waiting for help.
On those days, I think about Phoenix.
I think about the terrified, badly burned cat I picked up that day…
…and then I look at the safe, loved, spoiled boy he is today.
And I remember something incredibly important:
We may not be able to save them all. But to the ones we can save, what we do is everything.
Phoenix survived something he never should have had to endure.
But his story didn’t end in that fire.
His story became a beginning.
A beginning for him.
A beginning for me.
And a beginning for every animal who has been helped—and every animal we will continue to help—because Phoenix and Friends exists.
Someone tried to destroy his life.
Instead, Phoenix went on to inspire a rescue that would help save so many others.
And I can’t think of a more beautiful legacy for our sweet boy. 🐦🔥❤️🐾
This will always be for you, Phoenix.
You are where it all began. ❤️
