Our co founder Jill went to Davolls General Store and saw our Feppy’s obituary hanging on their wall. I don’t know them but the amount of special they must be is beyond my vocabulary. I’m definitely going to go see this for myself! I know list if you never met Feppy but I hope you take 2 minutes out of your day to read his obit that made the newspaper.
FEPO's obituary
On November 21st Fepo aka Feppy passed away in his mom’s arms due to complications of being a rapid growth broiler rooster.
Fepo was hatched Sept 17, 2017 at Hoover Hatchery. Shortly after, he shipped to a tractor supply store in Massachusetts where he was sold as a meat bird.
Because Broilers have been selectively bred for rapid growth they are slaughtered at just 42-56 days of age even though they still have baby feathers and baby chirps. If not killed, many will die in the months to follow.
Fepo was rescued by Don’t Forget Us..Pet Us farm animal sanctuary at just days old. He was quickly paired with an abandoned feral kitten (Pumpky) who helped Feppy thrive his first few months.
He was intended “For Educational Purposes Only” hence his name FEPO. It was to be a daily reminder to NOT fall in love with him knowing his short lifespan and the many fatal complications of being a broiler.
Fepo quickly lived up to his name becoming an ambassador for broiler chickens. He educated people all over the world about the cruel injustices surrounding the broiler industry and the effects of rapid growth. Including heart failure, fractured legs, pneumonia burn, sudden death syndrome..to name a few. Broilers are grown to market weight even though they are just chicks. Their baby hearts and baby legs simply can’t withstand the rapid growth.
The industry has selectively bred them this way, so it’s more cost efficient as over 1 million chickens are killed every hour for their meat, even though they are all just babies!
Feppy lived 38 months and 3 days, he fought his genetics everyday to stay with his family and friends. He absence is felt immensely already.
Feppy enjoyed car rides (propped up so he could see out the window), vegan apple pies (on special occasions) organic oatmeal, the beach, Van’s pumpkin waffles, non dairy vanilla yogurt, blueberries, quinoa, his friends on the farm, listening to Alexa (Silent night by Carrie Underwood and Poohs Corner by Kenny Loggins were his favorite), time with his human family, resting on dog beds, sitting by the fireplace, time at the beach, getting face rubs, his Facebook supporters and most of all his mom who loved him immeasurably.
He loved the Red Sox and New England Patriots. Especially his favorite QB Tom Brady., with whom he credits much of his longevity following a similar anti inflammatory diet.
His favorite holidays were his birthday and Christmas. Ohhhh, how he loved the decorations, the lights, the music , the tree and his vegan strawberry birthday cake.
His antics included, being naughty and chasing the sanctuary cows, bullying the dogs so he could be the first one out the door, stomping over to the other farm animals so he could try to eat their food, pecking at his moms toes when he didn’t want to come in for bed and talking back when being reprimanded.
He relished Going through the fast food drive thru and educating staff just where their chicken patties and nuggets come from. He took every opportunity to educate.....and to love.
Feppy impacted lives in his local community and all over the world. Many people, after learning about the broiler industry stopped eating chicken, some gave up meat all together. Feppy also helped a young lady graduate high school. On days she didn’t want to get out of bed her mom would quickly go to the sanctuary page and show her daughter what antics Feppy was up to that day. She saw that he was still here at 4 months, then 7 months then a year, she told us “when I was ready to throw in the towel. I would think of Fepo, despite all odds was still living with an attitude and I found the strength to walk into school. I want to thank Don’t Forget Us Pet Us for rescuing a chicken that in return rescued me from the dark place I was in around that time”
Fepo motivated others fighting their own battles to never give up, that they too can defy the odds and too keep going. He Facebook posts brought smiles, inspiration, strength, love and laughter all over the globe.
Fepo is survived by his heart broken mom Deb, his brother Cole, Auntie Jill, Auntie Michelle, all the Don’t Forget Us..Pet Us board members and residents of the sanctuary as well as thousands upon thousands of very loved and appreciated Facebook and social media friends, who have truly become like family to Feppy and the sanctuary. In his last days as he rested comfortably, each and every one of your comments were read to him through his moms tears. Thank you for loving him, supporting him and constantly reminding a Born to die meat bird that his life has value. He loved you all very, very much.
