Sea otter moms turn kelp into a floating crib.

In a moving ocean, that is not cute. That is engineering.

The detail most people miss is the pup’s fur.

A newborn sea otter is so fluffy and air-filled that it floats like a cork, but that same built-in life jacket keeps it from diving with mom. So while she hunts below for clams, crabs, mussels, and urchins, she wraps the pup in kelp near the surface.

It is not random seaweed. Kelp forests act like underwater scaffolding, giving otters a place to anchor, rest, feed, and keep babies from drifting into trouble with the tide.

The pup may squeak while she is gone, bobbing in its leafy seatbelt, but the system works. The ocean keeps moving. The mother keeps diving. The kelp holds the tiny passenger in place.

Nature did not give sea otters a crib.

So they made one from the sea.
