I purchased my first Mini Schnauzer in 2005. Jenny was a pet quality, AKC registered, 8 month old, light salt & pepper female that was being sold because the owner decided to breed Cane Corso's instead. Jenny is living the good life with one of her grand daughters and a lovely family. In 2009, I decided I wanted a champion show dog and searched far and wide until I found Joan Huber at Blythewood K

ennel in eastern PA. I purchased Blythewood Gun For Hire in 2011 and Joan showed him to his championship for me. I am still learning how to groom and prepare a show dog but hope to be showing some of Gunner's children in the ring within the next couple of years. As a child, I grew up on a farm and raised rabbits, pigs, goats and bottle calves. I attended Hocking College and received an Associates Degree in Recreation and Wildlife with a major in Horsemanship. I then went on to breed, raise and train horses with a herd of about 25-30 at any one time and two stallions. While I want my Schnauzers to be pretty and follow the standard, of the greatest and equal importance is health and temperament. All dogs have annual eye exams and the puppies are all checked before going to new homes as well. As new genetic tests are developed, I plan to use them to scrutinize my breeding stock to the best of my ability.

Poe is a salt/pepper boy born March 3, 2026 from Manny x Ophelia. No one that is on the waiting list is ready so I'm now accepting new applications for him. He's been quite content on his own since his siblings have left. Shows some independence but loves a good snuggle. He's a lower energy guy but does enjoy his toys. www.bellevistaschnauzers.com

I am not against rescuing.

I am against people that believe all breeders should stop breeding and die.

I am against them ONLY valuing rescue dogs.

I am against them wanting our ethical and responsible breeders put out of business so they can support ill intentioned breeder’s dogs.

I am against ill intentioned breeders continuing to produce puppies without health an temperament even being a consideration.

I am against ill intentioned breeders not giving a s**t what happens to their dogs if the owner can no longer keep them.

I am against people being shamed for buying responsibly.

I done said it. ❤️🙌🏼

Share it. Live it! Do what is right for our dogs.

Are you feeding your dog too often? ⏰🍗⏰🥩⏰🥕🐶

Dogs fed once a day are less likely to be diagnosed with age-related conditions than pooches fed more often, study claims.

In the largest largest study to date of feeding frequency conducted in companion dogs, University of Arizona-led experts analyzed data on 24,238 pet dogs from the US and found:

• Being fed once a day lowered the risk of nine types of canine health problems
• These included cancer, dental issues and either kidney or urinary complications
• Similarly, dogs fed only once daily scored lower on tests of cognitive problems
• But the team said it is too early to advise owners to change their pet's diets

“We view these results as an exciting first step of an ongoing exploration of the impact of diet on companion dogs living in human environments. Given the intense interest in, and popularization of, ‘longevity diets’ such as intermittent fasting and time-restricted feeding, these types of studies in dogs are both timely and important. We believe these studies will ultimately offer insights into factors that promote health and longevity for both dogs and humans.” - The Dog Aging Project

The scientists and researchers we interviewed for The Forever Dog book agreed that one meal a day for healthy dogs is ideal, in terms of maximizing autophagy and minimizing metabolic stress.

To learn how to transition your pup to a new eating schedule and create an eating window (which allows your pup to receive the benefits of intermittent fasting while offering the same amount of food) check out the section in our book “Personalized Meals as Medicine” found here: www.foreverdog.com

Anyone interested in doing titers can have samples sent to the University of Wisconsin. For Parvo/Distemper/Adenovirus it's about $90. https://www.vetmed.wisc.edu/lab/cavids/titer-testing-service/

🧪 Vaccine Titers in Dogs: What They Can (and Can’t) Tell You

With more pet parents questioning vaccination schedules, titer testing has become a popular topic.

Let’s take a clear, balanced look at what titers are and how they fit into a more individualized approach to your dog’s health. Are titers a reliable alternative to vaccines?

Let’s break it down.

🔬 What is a titer test❓️

A titer test is a blood test that measures antibodies against specific diseases, most commonly parvovirus, distemper, and adenovirus in dogs.

👉 In simple terms...
It checks whether your dog’s immune system has recognized and responded to a vaccine or past exposure.

---
🎯 What are titers used for❓️

Titers are commonly used to:

▪️ Assess if a previous vaccine “took” (especially in puppies)
▪️ Help guide revaccination decisions
▪️ Reduce unnecessary vaccination, especially in sensitive or chronically ill dogs

---
🐶 Puppies & Maternal Antibodies (important)

A positive titer in a young, unvaccinated puppy often reflects maternal antibodies. That is, immunity passed from the mother through colostrum.
A positive titer in a young puppy often reflects maternal antibodies and does not guarantee protection.

This means:
▪️ The antibodies are temporary
▪️ They do not create long-term immune memory
▪️ They typically decline between 6–16 weeks of age

As those antibodies fade, protection can drop...sometimes unpredictably.

---
📊 How are titers interpreted❓️

Results are usually reported as positive (protective) or negative (non-protective):

✅️ Positive titer
▪️ Indicates the presence of antibodies
▪️ Indicates prior immune response

🚫 Negative titer
▪️ No measurable antibodies detected
▪️ May indicate lack of protection, or simply that antibodies aren’t circulating at that moment

---
‼️ The most important limitation

This is where titers often get misunderstood:
👉 Titers measure antibodies, not full immunity.

The immune system has two major arms:
1️⃣ Antibody (humoral) immunity: what titers measure
2️⃣ Cell-mediated immunity: memory cells that respond later, but what titers do not measure

A dog may:
✔️ Have low/undetectable titers and still respond effectively to exposure
✔️ Have high titers but not guaranteed protection

This is because titers only reflect one piece of a much larger immune response. In other words, titers give useful information, but not the full picture.

---
🧠 What does the research say about reliability❓️

✔️ Titers are most reliable for core viruses, especially parvovirus and distemper

✔️ Accuracy can vary depending on the test and the disease being measured

✔️ There is limited large-scale data in dogs linking titer levels directly to protection
(https://www.aaha.org/resources/2022-aaha-canine-vaccination-guidelines/utilization-and-interpretation-of-serologic-titers/)

👉 In practice:
They are best used as a guidance tool, not a definitive answer

---
⏳ How long does immunity last❓️

Research shows that core vaccines (parvo, distemper, adenovirus) often provide:
➡️ At least 3 years of immunity, and often much longer (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16707236/)

This is why modern guidelines have moved away from annual core vaccines.

---
🤔 Why do some pet parents choose titers❓️

Pet parents may opt for titers when:
▪️ Their dog has had a previous vaccine reaction
▪️ They want a more individualized approach
▪️ Their dog is older or immunocompromised
▪️ They wish to avoid unnecessary boosters

These are reasonable discussions to have with a veterinarian.

---
🚫 When titers have linitations

✔️ Rabies: Still required by law in most areas

✔️ Non-core vaccines (like leptospirosis, bordetella): Titers are often unreliable or unavailable

✔️ Higher-risk environments: exposure risk may need to be weighed more heavily

---
⚖️ A Balanced Approach

Titers are best viewed as one tool among several.
They can help avoid unnecessary revaccination and boosters in some dogs, and provide insight into prior immune response.

The most evidence-based approach is:
👉 Low-risk dogs:
✔️ Greater reliance on titers and history

👉 Higher-risk dogs (exposure, environment, lifestyle):
✔️ Vaccination may play a more important role

📌
A truly holistic approach isn’t about choosing one side, it’s about using the right tool at the right time:

✔️ Nutrition
✔️ Environment
✔️ Titers
✔️ Individual risk assessment
✔️ And vaccination if or when appropriate

That’s how we support both long-term health and real-world protection.
