One of my favorites training techniques is long line training. It teaches the fundamentals of off leash training by allowing the dog extra freedom in busy areas while having the safety and security of having the leash attached to them.

This technique allows you to gauge how your dog will behave if you were to allow them off leash and it allows you to correct any bad habits before you go off leash.

As you can see Bonzo is pretty distracted but this is his first day performing obedience commands in a high distraction area and he did fantastic!

There is some pre requisite training you have to practice with your dog before doing long line work. If you have any questions about this type of training let me know!

It’s getting hot! 🥵 But that doesn’t mean you should completely avoid the heat with your dog. Springtime is a great time to get your dog acclimated to the heat. It’s a good idea to expose your dog to 70-80 degree weather so that they’re ready for the sweltering weather that’s coming our way soon. You don’t want to over do it and it’s ok to shorten the walks a bit while your dog is still accustomed to colder weather but it’s ok to let them feel the sun a little and allow them to pant. If you notice their pant gets a little raspy, they’re showing signs of fatigue and especially if the corners of their mouths are foaming you’ve pushed them a little too far and you should get them cool and hydrated. Be extra careful for short snouted dogs and elderly dogs too. Enjoy the spring and awesome walks with your dog!
