Ask first. Stay close. Every time.

I’ve spent 30+ years working with dogs, and this is the one rule I’d put on a billboard: before your child walks up to any dog, ask the owner. Not every dog wants to be touched, and not every “friendly” dog is friendly with a stranger’s hands in its face.

And when the answer is yes, you don’t step back — you stay right there. Kids move fast. Dogs read that as pressure. Your job is to watch both of them and end it the moment either one looks unsure.

That’s not overprotective. That’s how you raise a kid who respects animals and keep a good dog from getting a bad reputation.

After 30 years training dogs and a lifetime outdoors, I kept hitting the same wall: the gear I needed for real trail days with my dogs didn’t exist. So I invented it. Every product we make started as a problem I couldn’t solve with anything on the shelf.

And I built it to last on purpose. Cheap gear that falls apart in a season isn’t just a bad buy, it’s more waste headed for a landfill. We’d rather make one piece you use for years than ten you throw away.

Happy National Public Lands Day.

Every trail Jessie and I walk belongs to all of us — the forests, the beaches, the desert washes, the ridgelines. Nobody owns them, which means everybody’s responsible for them.

For dog people, that responsibility is simple and it isn’t optional:

Leash where it’s required. Wildlife and other hikers didn’t sign up to meet your dog.

Stay on the trail. Shortcuts kill the ground cover that holds the hillside together.

Pack it out. All of it. A full p**p bag left on a rock “for the way back” is still littering. If there’s no trash can at the trailhead, it rides out with you.

Give wildlife the whole trail. Your dog’s recall is the most important piece of gear you own out here, and it has to be solid before the elk show up, not after.

The land does the hard part. It just asks us to be good guests.

Always be carrying. 🐺

Treats in reach, water on hand, and everything else you need for the trail, so when the good moments show up, you’re ready for them. Good things happen out there.

Huskies, Malamutes, and Bernese are cool-weather dogs. Incredible engines, terrible radiators. Don’t take them out in the heat.

Pit Bulls and Boxers landed lower for one reason: heat. Short muzzles, low body fat, dark coats. They’ll go until they drop, and that’s exactly the problem. Short days, shade, water, and they’re a joy on the trail.

Every dog on this chart needs to be skeletally mature and cleared by your vet before you build distance. Never force pace. Watch the pavement temperature, watch the paws, and pack out what you pack in.

What’s your trail dog, and where would you rank them? I’ll defend my choices in the comments.

Dog p**p isn’t fertilizer, and it isn’t “natural” out here. Wildlife eats what the land provides and returns it. Our dogs eat nutrient-dense food from a bag, so what they leave behind adds extra nitrogen and phosphorus the ecosystem never asked for. That feeds algae in streams and lakes and helps invasive weeds push out native plants.

It also carries bacteria and parasites like E. coli, giardia, and roundworm. Rain washes them straight into the water that wildlife, other dogs, and people downstream depend on.

And the bagged one left beside the trail “for the way back”? Now it’s p**p and plastic.
