I recently learned that one of my sweet dog clients passed away from Addison’s disease.
In honor of this special dog, I wanted to share a little awareness about Addison’s disease in dogs, because many pet owners have never heard of it until it affects someone they love.
Addison’s disease (hypoadrenocorticism) is a serious hormonal condition where the adrenal glands don’t produce enough essential hormones. It can be difficult to diagnose because the symptoms often look like “just not feeling well.”
Some warning signs can include:
Lethargy or weakness
Vomiting or diarrhea
Loss of appetite
Weight loss
Trembling or shaking
Increased thirst
Collapse in severe cases
Symptoms can come and go, which is why Addison’s is often called “the great pretender.” With early diagnosis and proper treatment, many dogs can live happy, normal lives.
As someone who spends so much time with dogs, I always encourage pet parents to trust their instincts when something feels “off.” You know your dog best.
Please give your pups an extra hug tonight.
