I am going to talk about respect, and this is probably one of the most disrespectful things we deal with on a regular basis.

As most of you know, we are not a breed specific rescue, we see all animals as equal and worthy of our care. Whether they be fish or birds, roosters or livestock, whether they are grand champion dogs, the label does not matter to us but apparently it matters to a small percentage of you.

It is heartbreaking when we put some animals on our page and they get little to no interest but what is even worse is when we put an animal up, knowing exactly what will happen. Fun fact, the KPR team often have side bets on just how many minutes it will take until certain comments come up.

Whenever we put a pure breed dog up, there are always comments that imply that we are not good enough to rehome them. Whether it is a comment about contacting the breeder, whether it is tagging a breed specific rescue or whether (and I find this the most disrespectful) breed specific rescues asking us to hand the dog over to them because they do not believe that we are knowledgeable enough to have the dog in our care.

So why do I find these comments so offensive? I will try to explain some of the reasons.

Firstly, and most importantly, the owner has chosen to surrender to us. Often times they have had negative dealings with the breeder or don’t feel that breed specific rescue is right, or they have spoken with multiple rescues and family members before choosing the option they felt most comfortable with. Please understand that most times, owners love their dogs and want nothing but the best for them and if they choose us, then we will do our utmost to honour that. It is arrogant and cruel for anyone to undermine a loving owners heartbreak and make them doubt the choices they made.

For the record, we also have a larger social media base than the majority of breed specific organisations. This means that our animals can be seen by a lot more people, making finding their perfect home a little easier.

Whilst many breed specific rescues only rehome a handful of dogs per year, we rehome hundreds. We have strong relationships with vets and over a decade of rescue experience with all breeds. We are used to taking on significant medical cases and have a very good understanding of breed specific medical issues. We routinely do breed related surgeries (eyes, nares, etc) and we would never take on a dog that we could not afford to treat. Whilst I obviously appreciate that some people know more about specific breeds than I do, I believe that dog/rescue knowledge is more important.

Fun fact if I put a simple x at the end of a breed, then the breed specific rescues would not be interested, they only want pure breed dogs. Whilst I understand they are devoted to their breed, to me a dog is no more of less valuable for its genetics or its label.

From now on, anyone who tags another rescue, comments about contacting the breeder or insinuates that one of our KPR kids should be handed over to a breed specific rescue will be blocked. If you don’t think we are “good enough” or “worthy enough” for a certain dog, then please don’t follow us. Stop lurking in the shadows, ready to pounce if you see a dog, you think is “special”. Newsflash………..ALL dogs are special and worthy!
