🐱 Is your cat itchy? More importantly… HOW itchy?

An occasional scratch or grooming session is normal for any cat, but frequent licking, scratching, hair loss, or skin lesions can be a sign that something more is going on.

Allergies are a common cause of itching in cats, but parasites like fleas and skin mites, skin infections, and other conditions can also leave your cat feeling itchy and uncomfortable.

🐶 Playtime can take a dog from 0 to 100 pretty quickly! While excitement during play is completely normal, it’s also important that our dogs learn how to bring that energy back down when needed.

Teaching your dog to pause, disengage, settle, and refocus on you during exciting moments gives you more control when it really matters! This skill is especially useful around kids, visitors, other pets, or situations where high-energy play may become too much.

Practice taking short breaks during play, reward calm behavior, and then let the fun continue! Over time, your dog can learn that being excited is okay, but they also need to be able to settle when asked. 🐾

🌧️🐾 Rainy season means one thing for a lot of dogs: MUD!

Splashing through puddles and getting a little dirty is great fun, but mud and standing water can also harbor some not-so-fun things. Bacteria, parasites, Giardia, and Leptospira (the bacteria that causes leptospirosis) can all potentially be found in contaminated water, mud, and wet soil. 🦠

That doesn’t mean mud puddles have to be completely off-limits! Knowing the risks can help you make safer choices about where your dog plays. Avoid questionable standing water, don’t let your dog drink from puddles, keep vaccines and parasite prevention up to date, and give those muddy paws a good cleaning after playing in the mud! 🐶💦

Pets don’t have a desire or emotional need to “experience motherhood,” and there is no benefit to allowing them to have a litter before being spayed. Spaying prevents accidental pregnancies, eliminates heat cycles, and provides important health and behavioral benefits throughout their lives. It also helps protect against serious reproductive diseases, including pyometra and mammary cancer.

Spaying is an important part of responsible pet ownership and helps give our pets healthier, safer lives. If you have an intact female pet, talk to your vet about the best time to get them spayed. 🐾

While you’re working on your dog’s training, it’s okay to create distance, change your route, or skip situations you know will overwhelm or scare them.

Avoiding scary triggers can help prevent their fear from getting worse while also giving them more confidence and increasing their ability to learn and make progress.

Give your dog time to build confidence and new skills, then gradually work around those triggers when they’re better equipped to handle them. 🐾

Anaplasmosis is another tick-borne disease that can cause symptoms similar to Lyme disease, and it can even be transmitted by the same type of tick.

Cases are found throughout the United States, with higher numbers reported in the Northeast and Upper Midwest.

And it’s becoming increasingly important for dog owners to know about. In some areas, rates of Anaplasma exposure in dogs are comparable to rates of Lyme disease.

Urine marking can be frustrating, but there’s usually more to it than bad manners. First, make sure your veterinarian rules out medical causes. Hormones can play a role, so neutering may help reduce marking in some dogs, and stress or changes in the home can also contribute.

Then, go back to potty training basics! Take your dog outside frequently, supervise closely indoors, and reward them when they p*e outside, just like you would with a puppy. 🐾👏

And don’t forget to clean up these messes using an enzymatic cleaner! 🧽

🐟⚠️ Raw salmon can pose a serious (and sometimes deadly) risk to dogs.

Salmon poisoning is associated with the parasitic flatworm, Nanophyetus salmincola, which can carry the bacteria responsible for making dogs severely ill.
Dogs can be exposed after eating infected raw or undercooked salmon, trout, steelhead, and Pacific giant salamanders that are infected with the flatworm.

Without prompt treatment, salmon poisoning can become life-threatening.
If your dog may have eaten raw fish and starts showing signs of illness, contact your veterinarian right away. 🐶🐟
