Rock hyraxes can be found throughout much of Africa and parts of the Middle East, and live among boulders, rock crevices, and cliffs in colonies ranging from five to 60 individuals. They are also able to climb on steep rock surfaces (and sometimes each other!) because they have moist, rubbery foot pads that lift up in the center for a suction cup-like effect that helps them keep their grip on surfaces.
Another fun fact? These rock-loving animals are born and raised in underground burrows, hidden from view. Now that they're out for the season, we could watch them all day long...come see for yourself when you visit the Gelada Reserve!
