Resource Guarding: Early Signs Dog Owners Shouldn’t Ignore
Does your dog stiffen, growl, or snap when you get near their food, toys, or favorite spot? These can be early signs of resource guarding — a common behavior where dogs protect things they value.
Common warning signs include:
• Freezing or stiff body posture
• Growling when approached
• Showing teeth or snapping
• Eating faster when someone comes close
• Hovering over food, toys, or chews
• Moving items away to guard them
Resource guarding doesn’t mean your dog is “bad” or “aggressive.” It usually comes from fear, insecurity, or past experiences — and the earlier it’s addressed, the easier it is to fix.
With proper training and structure, resource guarding can be reduced or eliminated safely.
If you’re seeing any of these signs, professional help can make a huge difference — especially before it escalates.
