🎶 **The Story Behind “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing”** 🎶

Imagine it’s the 1700s.

A young man named **Robert Robinson** was growing up in England. His father died when he was still a child, and life was not easy. As a teenager, Robinson fell in with a rough crowd and became known for drinking and getting into trouble.

One night, he and his friends went to hear the famous preacher **George Whitefield**. They weren’t there because they wanted to change their lives—they went mostly to make fun of the preacher.

But something unexpected happened.

Whitefield’s message about God’s grace struck Robinson deeply. The young man who had gone there to mock the preacher walked away thinking seriously about his own life.

Not long afterward, Robinson committed his life to Christ and eventually became a preacher himself.

Then, at just **22 years old**, he wrote the hymn we now know as:

**“Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing.”**

One line in particular has lasted for generations:

🎵 *“Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love…”*

Those words are remarkably honest.

Robinson wasn’t pretending that faith meant never struggling again. He was admitting something many people quietly understand: **we can love God and still find ourselves wandering.**

And then comes the prayer:

**“Bind my wandering heart to Thee.”**

There’s another beautiful story connected to the hymn.

Years later, Robinson was traveling by stagecoach when a woman began reading the words of “Come, Thou Fount” aloud. She asked him what he thought of the hymn.

Robinson reportedly became emotional and said that the words reminded him of his own spiritual journey.

Whether every detail of that later story is perfectly preserved is uncertain, but the heart of the story remains powerful.

The man who once wandered became the man who wrote about wandering.

The teenager who went looking for trouble became a preacher.

And the hymn he wrote centuries ago still gives words to people today who are trying to find their way back to God.

Perhaps that's why **“Come, Thou Fount”** continues to resonate.

It isn't a song written by someone claiming to have everything figured out.

It's a prayer from someone who knew he needed grace.

**“Come, Thou Fount of every blessing…”**

Sometimes the most honest prayer isn't, *“Lord, I never wander.”*

It's simply:

**“Lord, when I wander, draw my heart back to You.”** ❤️
