Follow My Lead provides dog training and classes to meet the special needs of the urban dog. A well-trained dog is simply a dog that understands what you expect. Group classes take place on the Upper West Side - B

asic I, Basic II, Canine CItizenship, Rally Class, AKC Star Puppy, K9 Nose Work and Trick classes. We also offer 1:1 private lessons in NYC to work on your dog's specific needs. Our approach is positive and flexible because years of experience have taught us there is no one way to teach every dog or cure every problem.

Some Things That Happened Yesterday (6/10/2015) That You Didn't Tell Your Puppy

Yesterday the Mets lost to San Francisco in a no-hitter. You don't expect your dog to know what a no hitter is, so you probably didn't tell your puppy.

Yesterday a new Poet Laureate of the United States was named. Your puppy is unlikely to know the term "Poet Laureate," so you probably didn't share this news
The fact is the only English terms you expect your dog to understand are "command" words: sit, down, stay, come, leave it, drop it. We think of these as universal concepts because they are so important, and because they have been taught universally.
But they must be taught. Or rather they must be learned. They must be taught under different circumstances, in different places, with varying levels of distraction. Your dog has to be rewarded frequently and well for responding to a cue word, English words are not inherently easy or obvious to dogs.

So if your dog does not drop that half eaten sandwich he has in his mouth, know that unless you have spent some time carefully teaching him what ‘drop it’ means, you might as well be talking box scores.
