Louis's story is somewhat heartbreaking. Before the end of 2021 his family abandoned him and left him tied to a fence, where he was attacked by some sort of animal. This is what accounts for the scars on his face. But Louis is a resilient boy, so into the shelter system he came. He was noted to be deaf and kid friendly, so he was adopted to a family with children and was reported to thrive. Every
few weeks he would be brought into the groomers who raved about this sweet little man. They noted how happy and excited he would be whenever the mother would show up to retrieve him with her children in tow. Fast forward to the middle of April and "some deaf bull terrier estimated to be 7 years old" made it into the Franklin County Dog Shelter as a stray. They shared his picture on social media, but after a short failed attempt to have him fostered for one weekend they reached out to us to take him, and we said yes. The same time, his groomers saw his picture, recognized him immediately informed the shelter about his owners. The owners didn't want him back, so 5 year old Louis, came to us at the mission. This boy has done nothing but thrive since he's been with us. His foster mom had recently lost her deaf female bull terrier (missing toes on her back right leg), so she agreed to foster Louis (who's missing a toe on his back right leg). Using slow introduction protocols with her 11 year old deaf senior, Louis has fit in with him seamlessly. He is a little more active for the old fella, but his intentions are always positive, so when Louis's fur brother starts getting tired, she appropriately gives him a brake. As for kids, well.. let's put it this way. We really want Louis to go to a home with children. Every time his foster gives him a little more leeway to see how he does as a family dog, Louis makes the right choice again and again. Finally, she decided to make the leap and have her young son and him in the same room, with him off leash. To see what he would do. With Louis on one end of the sofa and her son on the other. Louis stood up from his end of the couch, carefully walked over to the boy and gently laid his big ole noggin on the boys lap. Louis is a superstar. The Bull Terrier Rescue Mission, Inc. (BTR Mission/BTRM) is a 501c3 not for profit, all-volunteer, foster based organization dedicated to advocating for the health and welfare of unwanted, abused, or abandoned Bull Terriers. We work towards extracting them from their dire circumstances and placing them in homes where they can be evaluated, allowed to heal, and rehabilitated if necessary. BTRM works with animal shelters, rescue professionals, Bull Terrier owners, and veterinarians throughout the United States. If BTRM cannot provide direct support, cases are directed to appropriate organizations that can. In all cases, tireless work is gladly expended. The Bull Terrier Rescue Mission does not discriminate due to the age or health of its Bull Terriers. Professional veterinary care is provided – including spay/neuter – prior to matching each Bull Terrier with the right adoptive home. No animal is euthanized for need of medical care. That option only exists if the animal displays extreme threatening behavior towards humans, or if their health is unrecoverable.
