The AC gets blamed for a lot of sneezing in this part of the world. Sometimes fairly. Sometimes not.

Dry air and dust do make cats sneeze, but the sneezing settles once your cat moves to another room, and nothing else changes. Your cat still eats, the eyes and nose stay clean, and the other cats in the house are fine. When it is a virus, the pattern is different. It carries on for days or weeks, discharge appears around the eyes or nose, appetite drops, and often another cat in the home starts too.

Cat flu comes from either of two viruses. Feline Calicivirus (FCV) tends to affect the mouth, with ulcers, red gums, and drooling. Feline Herpesvirus (FHV-1) tends to affect the eyes and nose, with repeated sneezing, watery eyes, and squinting. One cat can carry both.

Most cases are not an emergency. But do not wait it out if your cat has gone a full day without eating, if there are mouth ulcers or heavy drooling, if an eye is shut or cloudy, or if it is a kitten, a senior, or a house where other cats are showing signs. What owners describe as cat flu is usually either Feline Calicivirus (FCV) or Feline Herpesvirus (FHV-1). In the first days they look almost the same, which is why so many cats end up treated for the wrong one.

The quickest clue is where the trouble started. Mouth first, ulcers on the tongue or gums, drooling, sore red gums, points towards calicivirus. Eyes first, watery discharge, one eye held half shut, sneezing and congestion, points towards herpesvirus.

There is an oral antiviral for each, and your vet can help you confirm which one you are dealing with before you start. Worth knowing too that not every sore mouth or runny eye is viral. Chlamydia and mycoplasma cause similar signs and need completely different treatment.

Drug resistance is becoming one of the hidden challenges in FIP therapy. Some cats respond well at the beginning of oral treatment, but halfway through the virus adapts. When that happens, the dosage increases and treatment may extend to 120 days or more.
