Competition between House Sparrow and Eastern Bluebird is a classic example of two species fighting over the same limited resource: nesting cavities. Eastern bluebirds are native birds that rely on natural tree cavities or nest boxes to raise their young. House sparrows, on the other hand, are non-native (introduced from Europe) and extremely aggressive cavity nesters. They don’t just compete passively—they actively take over nesting sites. A house sparrow will often claim a nest box before bluebirds arrive, and if a bluebird pair tries to use it, sparrows may attack them, destroy eggs, or even kill nestlings and adult birds.
Because house sparrows can breed multiple times in a season and adapt well to human environments, they tend to outcompete bluebirds in areas with lots of buildings and feeders. Bluebirds are more selective and less aggressive, so without intervention they can lose access to suitable nesting sites.
